VLIDORT-QS: A quasi-spherical vector radiative transfer model

R. Spurr et al.

Summary: This paper presents a new VLIDORT-based quasi-spherical vector radiative transfer model (VLIDORT-QS) for forward-model simulations of long-path measurements in spherical-atmosphere configurations. The model accurately treats the single-scatter radiation field in spherical geometry and approximates the diffuse-scatter source terms locally through pseudo-spherical simulations. The model has been validated against a fully-spherical Monte Carlo code and the standard VLIDORT model for nadir-view scenarios.

Assessing Multi-Stream Radiative Transfer Schemes for the Calculation of Aerosol Radiative Forcing in the Martian Atmosphere

H. Chen-Chen et al.

Summary: The study evaluates the radiative effects of dust aerosol on Mars, finding that the highly efficient two-stream methods provide accurate estimations under low-to-medium dust opacity scenarios, but errors increase with opacity; the size of dust particles has a significant impact on radiative forcing estimations, while the shape of particles has a minor influence.

GFIT3: a full physics retrieval algorithm for remote sensing of greenhouse gases in the presence of aerosols

Zhao-Cheng Zeng et al.

Summary: By developing the GFIT3 algorithm to account for aerosol scattering effects, the performance of remote sensing of GHGs in polluted urban atmospheres has been improved. Evaluation using synthetic spectra showed errors in CO2 and CH4 retrievals were less than 1% on average, indicating that atmospheric scattering does not induce large biases in retrievals when aerosols are properly characterized. Comparing GHG retrievals from GFIT3 with those from the CLARS-GFIT algorithm revealed a significant correlation between retrieval bias and aerosol optical depth (AOD).
