Neurofilament Light Chain Is a Novel Biomarker for Major Depression and Related Executive Dysfunction

Mu-Hong Chen et al.

Summary: This study found that patients with major depressive disorder had elevated levels of NfL, which were positively correlated with tumor necrosis factor-alpha levels and deficits in executive function.

Pro-inflammatory cytokines and suicidal behavior among patients with bipolar I disorder

Summary: This study found distinct differences in serum levels of sTNF-alpha R1 between BD patients with and without suicidal ideation, further reinforcing the hypothesis of a link between suicidal behavior and neuroinflammation pathophysiology in BD.

Recent Advances in the Impact of Infection and Inflammation on Stroke Risk and Outcomes

Stephanie E. Oh et al.

Summary: Inflammation plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of cerebrovascular diseases. Recent studies have shown that systemic infection and gut dysbiosis can modulate inflammation and the risk of stroke. Infections and inflammation can induce atherosclerosis and cardiac injury, and directly damage the endothelium, aggravating secondary inflammation after stroke. Gut dysbiosis can cause inflammation by modulating intestinal lymphocyte populations that can directly enter the brain. Immune dysregulation after stroke further worsens outcomes, leading to a compounding feedback loop of infections and gut dysbiosis.

Neurofilaments light: Possible biomarker of brain modifications in bipolar disorder

Veronica Aggio et al.

Summary: This study investigated the association between neurofilament light (NfL) levels and white matter microstructure in bipolar disorder (BD) patients. The results showed that NfL levels were higher in BD patients compared to healthy controls. Furthermore, a positive correlation was found between NfL levels and axial diffusivity (AD). These findings suggest the presence of neurodegeneration and regeneration processes in BD.

Baseline Working Memory Predicted Response to Low-Dose Ketamine Infusion in Patients with Treatment-Resistant Depression

Summary: Pretreatment working memory function may predict the treatment response to low-dose ketamine infusion in patients with treatment-resistant depression. Patients with poorer working memory function at baseline may show a better response to ketamine infusion.

Systemic inflammatory regulators and 7 major psychiatric disorders: A two-sample Mendelian randomization study

Xinzhen Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the causal relationships between systemic inflammation and psychiatric disorders using genome-wide association study data. The results suggest that several inflammatory regulators may be causally associated with disease risk, and highlight the potential impact of neuro-psychiatric disorders on systemic inflammation regulators.

Relationship between cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers of inflammation and tissue damage in primary progressive multiple sclerosis

Jacob Talbot et al.

Summary: This exploratory study aimed to investigate the degree of intrathecal inflammation and its association with disease activity and severity in patients with primary progressive multiple sclerosis (PPMS). The results showed increased concentrations of various cytokines in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of PPMS patients, but weak associations were found between these inflammatory markers and neuroaxonal damage, demyelination, and disease severity.

Neuro-axonal injury in COVID-19: the role of systemic inflammation and SARS-CoV-2 specific immune response

Cedric Hirzel et al.

Summary: Severe COVID-19 is associated with increased levels of cytokines and subsequent neuronal injury as reflected by elevated levels of sNfL. Patients with severe disease develop higher levels of neutralizing antibodies and SARS-CoV-2-specific T cells. However, mounting a strong virus-specific humoral and cell-mediated immune response does not protect against neuro-axonal damage.

Combined influence of depression severity and low-grade inflammation on incident hospitalization and mortality risk in Italian adults

Alessandro Gialluisi et al.

Summary: The study found that depression and low-grade inflammation are associated with the risk of hospitalizations and mortality, with higher severity of depression leading to increased risk of events. This relationship remained stable even after adjusting for other factors, and was partly influenced by lifestyles and chronic conditions.

Inspiration for the prevention and treatment of neuropsychiatric disorders: New insight from the bone-brain-axis

Ye Zhao et al.

Summary: Bone is not only a main supporting structure of the body, but also a potential endocrine organ that participates in various physiological and pathophysiological processes through bioactive cytokines. The active cytokines secreted by bone cells and bone marrow can directly affect the central nervous system and regulate brain function and individual behavior. The bidirectional regulation of the bone-brain axis has significant implications for neuroscience.

Summary: The study found that NfL levels were significantly higher in the MDD group compared to the healthy norm population, while no significant increase was observed in the SZ group, and there was no correlation between NfL and inflammatory markers. In the DSST test, a negative correlation was observed between NfL values and cognitive performance in patients with MDD.
