Living alone, loneliness and lack of emotional support as predictors of suicide and self-harm: A nine-year follow up of the UK Biobank cohort

Richard J. Shaw et al.

Summary: The study found that living alone or living with a non-partner increased the risk of suicide for men but not for women, and loneliness had a modest relationship with suicide. Loneliness may be more important as a risk factor for self-harm than for suicide, and it may lessen the protective associations of cohabitation.

Exploring the role of loneliness in relation to self-injurious thoughts and behaviour in the context of the integrated motivational-volitional model

Heather McClelland et al.

Summary: Loneliness plays an independent role in distinguishing individuals with a history of self-injurious thoughts and behaviors, and moderates the relationship between defeat, entrapment, and self-injurious thoughts. Further exploration of these associations could enhance understanding of the role of loneliness in suicide risk and guide the development of preventive interventions.
