Highly selective proton exchange membranes for vanadium redox flow batteries enabled by the incorporation of water-insoluble phosphotungstic acid-metal organic framework nanohybrids

Shaoxiong Zhai et al.

Summary: In this study, composite proton exchange membranes with functionalized nanoparticles were prepared to improve proton conductivity and reduce vanadium permeability. The membranes demonstrated higher proton conductivity and lower vanadium permeability, resulting in improved energy efficiency in vanadium redox flow batteries.

A review of proton exchange membranes based on protic ionic liquid/polymer blends for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells

Hosni Ahmed Elwan et al.

Summary: Protic ionic liquids are receiving increasing research attention due to their versatile properties, particularly as ideal electrolytes for proton exchange membrane fuel cells. Blending various polymers with protic ILs to form solid films for PEMFCs has been explored. Five conventional polymers combined with protic ILs are discussed in detail, along with other polymers used in PEMs based on protic ILs, to provide comprehensive coverage in this area of research.

Nafion-Based Proton-Exchange Membranes Built on Cross-Linked Semi-Interpenetrating Polymer Networks between Poly(acrylic acid) and Poly(vinyl alcohol)

Abu Zafar Al Munsur et al.

Summary: The semi-IPN membrane NPP-95, composed of Nafion, PAA, and PVA, exhibited excellent thermal, mechanical, and dimensional stability, as well as lower permeability and higher conductivity compared to re-Nafion. The membrane showed significantly improved water management and lower hydrogen crossover under actual fuel cell operating conditions. In both PEMFC and PEMWE applications, NPP-95 demonstrated higher current density and better performance than re-Nafion.

Zr-MOF-Enabled Controllable Ion Sieving and Proton Conductivity in Flow Battery Membrane

Li Xin et al.

Summary: The study introduced acid-stable Zr-metal organic frameworks with different pore structures and channel properties as fillers into a non-fluorinated sulfonated poly (ether ether ketone) membrane, resulting in enhanced coulombic efficiency and voltage efficiency in a vanadium redox flow battery system. MOF-801 reduced molecular sieving property, while MOF-808 increased proton conductivity, and the combination of the two showed improved performance in the flow battery system.

Fabrication of water-insoluble phosphotungstic acid-carbon nitride nanohybrids for promoting proton transport of nanocomposite proton exchange membranes

Shaoxiong Zhai et al.

Summary: In this study, water-insoluble P-C3N4 nanohybrids were synthesized to improve proton transport and conductivity in composite proton exchange membranes. These nanohybrids demonstrated higher proton conductivity than the control samples in liquid water and under specific temperature and humidity conditions, leading to significantly improved performance of proton exchange membranes in fuel cell applications.
