Revealing the Intrinsic Atomic Structure and Chemistry of Amorphous LiO2-Containing Products in Li-O2 Batteries Using Cryogenic Electron Microscopy

Peng Zhang et al.

Summary: Utilizing electron beam irradiation, researchers in this study induced crystallization of amorphous discharge products in aprotic lithium-oxygen batteries, providing insights into the composition and distribution of discharge products. The study revealed an amorphous LiO2 phase dominating the discharge particles, with a small amount of nanocrystalline Li2O2 islands dispersed within, shedding light on the chemistry of LOBs and the importance of excluding beam-induced artifacts in traditional TEM characterizations.

Validation of the Crystallography Open Database using the Crystallographic Information Framework

Antanas Vaitkus et al.

Summary: The data curation practices of the Crystallography Open Database (COD) are described in this article, with a focus on formal validation using the Crystallographic Information Framework (CIF). The cif_validate program, capable of validating CIF files against both DDL1 and DDLm dictionaries, is presented and used to process the entire COD. Validation results from over 450000 CIF files are shown to be a valuable resource in data maintenance and ontology development, along with a set of programs intended to aid in dictionary migration from DDL1 to DDLm.

Poor Stability of Li2CO3 in the Solid Electrolyte Interphase of a Lithium-Metal Anode Revealed by Cryo-Electron Microscopy

Bing Han et al.

Summary: The stability of lithium-metal batteries is determined by the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI). Direct atomic imaging of the SEI using cryogenic transmission electron microscopy reveals that lithium carbonate is unstable in the SEI, leading to gas production when reacting with the electrolyte and a dynamically evolving SEI. Sulfur-containing additives preferentially generate Li2SO4 and other substances, limiting SEI thickening and enhancing battery life.

Lithium Host:Advanced architecture components for lithium metal anode

Yifeng Cheng et al.

Summary: Lithium metal batteries have attracted widespread attention due to the increasing demand for high energy and power energy storage devices. However, issues such as dendrite formation, low coulombic efficiency, and fast electrolyte consumption have hindered their practical applications for decades. Addressing these issues by tuning the lithium deposition through structuring a host for Li metal anode is seen as an efficient method to improve the electrochemical performance and safety of lithium metal batteries.

Summary: The flexibility and resilience of the SEI skin layer play a vital role in preserving an intact SEI 3D framework after lithium stripping. Cells cycled under accurately controlled uniaxial pressure can enhance the repeated utilization of the SEI and improve Coulombic efficiency by up to 97%, reducing the formation of additional SEI and inactive dead Li.
