Changes in the promoter of a defender against apoptotic cell death gene affect its expression in upland cotton

Ying Bao et al.

Summary: This study compared the expression of the DAD1 gene in an elite cultivar and a wild variety of cotton, revealing that the expression of a subgenomic homoeolog of DAD1 was significantly upregulated in the cultivated cotton. Additionally, 18 variations, including 14 single nucleotide polymorphisms and four indels, were identified between the promoters of the two cotton types, with at least 10 variations related to possible cis-regulatory elements. Further transient tobacco assays confirmed that the activity of the DAD1 promoter in the cultivated cotton was stronger than in the wild cotton, indicating dynamic changes in the gene promoter during genetic divergence.
