Guiding effect of runaway electrons in atmospheric pressure nanosecond pulsed discharge: mode transition from diffuse discharge to streamer

Bangdou Huang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the role of runaway electrons during the pulsed breakdown in the atmosphere. It is found that the current amplitude of runaway electrons drastically decreases with the voltage amplitude and that the peak electric field at the front of the ionization wave plays a key role in maintaining the runaway state. Experimental observations and simulations explain the transition from diffuse discharge to streamer and the non-uniformity of discharge.

Study of the electric field in a diffuse nanosecond positive ionization wave generated in a pin-to-plane geometry in atmospheric pressure air

Anne Bourdon et al.

Summary: The dynamics of a nanosecond positive ionization front generated in a pin-to-plane geometry in atmospheric pressure air were simulated using a 2D axisymmetric drift-diffusion fluid model. The study showed that discharge ignition time and voltage at ignition depend mostly on the voltage rise time, while the connection time strongly relies on both the voltage plateau and rise time values.

Study of vacuum ultraviolet emission in helium and helium/nitrogen mixtures

Andrew Fierro et al.

Summary: Research shows that helium photon emissions in generating plasmas can induce photoionization of nitrogen molecules, playing a significant role in ionization wave dynamics. Despite being trapped, atomic helium emission lines remain a significant source of nitrogen photoionization. The impact of radiation trapped photon emissions on ionization wave dynamics highlights the importance of considering these radiation dynamics in plasma reactors.

Summary: This paper presents a review of general and specific properties of ionization waves-streamers, discussing characteristics of streamers in gases and liquids, sprites in the Earth's atmosphere, and guided streamers in cold atmospheric-pressure plasma jets. Information on streamer structure, propagation velocity, and radius, as well as parameters of the streamer plasma obtained using diagnostic methods, numerical modeling, and analytical approach in various media are analyzed.

Morphology of positive ionization waves in atmospheric pressure air: influence of electrode set-up geometry

Anne Bourdon et al.

Summary: A numerical parametric study on positive diffuse discharges in point-to-plane geometry in air at atmospheric pressure was conducted, examining various discharge characteristics. Factors such as ignition time, connection time to the grounded cathode plane, discharge shape, maximum radius, evolution of maximum electric field, and ionization front velocity were analyzed. The study found that the radius of curvature of the anode tip and shape of the anode electrode had minimal influence on discharge characteristics, while the presence of a disc holder or a small computational domain significantly affected the discharge radius and shape.

Generation of runaway electrons in plasma after a breakdown of a gap with a sharply non-uniform electric field strength distribution

D. Beloplotov et al.

Summary: This paper focuses on the initiation and formation of negative streamer discharge, as well as the generation of runaway electrons. By conducting experiments with nanosecond voltage pulses, measurements of voltage, discharge current, and dynamic displacement current were taken to gather data on the dynamics of runaway electron generation in relation to streamer formation.
