Advances in Tin(II)-Based Perovskite Solar Cells: From Material Physics to Device Performance

Man Li et al.

Summary: Metal halide perovskites, particularly lead-based ones, have been extensively studied in the optoelectronic materials field due to their unique properties, but concerns about the toxicity of lead have prompted the search for non-toxic alternatives, with tin(II) emerging as a promising candidate. While tin-based perovskite solar cells have shown progress, issues like rapid oxidation and decomposition still impact their stability and efficiency.

Efficient Passivation Strategy on Sn Related Defects for High Performance All-Inorganic CsSnI3 Perovskite Solar Cells

Bo Li et al.

Summary: This study utilized a thioamides passivation strategy to modulate defect state density at surfaces and grain boundaries in CsSnI3 perovskites, achieving high-performance all-inorganic CsSnI3 PSCs. Surface passivation reduced deep level trap state defect density originating from Sn2+ ion and Sn2+ oxidation, restraining nonradiative recombination and elongating carrier lifetime.

Localized Electron Density Engineering for Stabilized B-γ CsSnI3-Based Perovskite Solar Cells with Efficiencies >10%

Tao Ye et al.

Summary: The undesirable oxidation in CsSnI3 is restricted by engineering the localized electron density with phthalimide (PTM) additive, resulting in reduced defect density and relatively grain-ordered perovskite film. Champion efficiencies are obtained for modified rigid and flexible B-gamma CsSnI3-based PSCs, and the encapsulated devices exhibit high stability under various conditions.

Different structural evolutions of inorganic perovskite CsGeI3

Tian Luo et al.

Summary: The most stable non-centrosymmetric trigonal structure of CsGeI3 perovskite system was found in calculations, different from CsSnI3 perovskite systems. A distorted stable structure of mixed Sn-Ge perovskite system (CsSn0.5Ge0.5I3) was proposed. The bandgap evolution of CsSnxGe1-xI3 perovskites is completely different from Sn-Pb perovskite compounds, showing a linear change after considering the spin-orbit coupling effect.

Summary: Our study investigates the effects of Sn-I and Ge-I in CsGe1-xSnxI3 on PV performances using first-principles calculations. The results show that CsGe0.5Sn0.5I3 is a promising light-absorbing material with benign defects, strong light absorption, and small carrier effective masses. The alloying of both band edges and defect states in CsGe0.5Sn0.5I3 results in better defect properties, showcasing the potential of alloy engineering in regulating defect levels in perovskites.

Revealing superoxide-induced degradation in lead-free tin perovskite solar cells

Zhihao Zhang et al.

Summary: Research has shown that the stability of (NH2)2CHSnI3 perovskites degrades more severely under light/O-2 exposure compared to O-2 exposure alone, due to the generation of superoxide from the reaction between O-2 and photoexcited electrons. Strategies to suppress superoxide formation by filling V-I sites in FASnI3 have been proposed to enhance stability. Understanding the fatal impact of superoxide on the stability of Sn-based perovskite solar cells is crucial for further research and development.
