Relationships among the Catalytic Performance, Redox Activity, and Structure of Cu-CHA Catalysts for the Direct Oxidation of Methane to Methanol Investigated Using In Situ XAFS and UV-Vis Spectroscopies

Junya Ohyama et al.

Summary: The catalytic performance of Cu zeolites for the direct conversion of methane to methanol was investigated. The reduction rate of Cu-CHA was found to be highly correlated with catalytic activity. The reduction of Cu2+ is associated with the activation of C-H bonds in CH4, which is the rate-determining step for the reaction. The local structure of Cu-CHA affects selectivity, turnover frequency, and Cu2+ reduction rate.

Superior Performance of Copper Phosphate α-Cu2P2O7 Catalysts for Partial Oxidation of Methane into Formaldehyde

Taiki Akiyama et al.

Summary: The catalytic performance of Cu-POx catalysts with different Cu/P molar ratios for the partial oxidation of methane has been investigated. The Cu-POx catalysts exhibited superior performance in the formation of formaldehyde compared to other metal phosphates. Among all CuPOx catalysts with different copper phosphate phases, the Cu-POx catalyst with the alpha-Cu2P2O7 phase showed the highest yield of formaldehyde in methane oxidation at 923 K.

Data science assisted investigation of catalytically active copper hydrate in zeolites for direct oxidation of methane to methanol using H2O2

Junya Ohyama et al.

Summary: Dozens of Cu zeolites with different frameworks were tested for direct oxidation of CH4 to CH3OH using H2O2. Analysis of structural variables, analytical studies and data science techniques revealed the relationships between catalytic activity and the structural variables, proposing the local structures of Cu zeolites with high activity.

Dioxygen Activation Kinetics over Distinct Cu Site Types in Cu-Chabazite Zeolites

Daniel T. Bregante et al.

Summary: Cu-exchanged zeolites can activate O-2 to form active sites for partial methane oxidation, nitrogen oxide decomposition, and carbon monoxide oxidation. The kinetics of O-2 activation depend on the types and distribution of Cu sites within the zeolites, influenced by the arrangement of framework Al atoms. Experimental and theoretical analyses reveal the complex processes by which Cu ions activate O-2 to form active Cu(x)O(y) complexes, shedding light on the mechanisms underlying these reactions.

Thermodynamics Perspective on the Stepwise Conversion of Methane to Methanol over Cu-Exchanged SSZ-13

Florian Goltl et al.

Summary: Transition-metal exchanged zeolites show high selectivity in converting methane to methanol through a stepwise process. A comprehensive theoretical study is conducted to identify thermodynamically preferred active sites in Cu-exchanged zeolite SSZ-13 during the conversion and develop a thermodynamic model for different active sites anchored in various structures supported by different local Al distributions. The results are compared with experimental measurements, showing agreement and providing insights for optimizing the conversion process.
