The double-edged effect of single atom metals on photocatalysis

Xiaoming Liu et al.

Summary: Single atom catalysts (SACs) are proposed as ideal materials for catalysis and this study investigates their effects on the intrinsic structure and properties of the photocatalytic substrate. A green synthesis approach for Ni-SA/g-C3N4 catalysts with different Ni-N4 coordination contents is proposed and the active sites and roles of Ni-N4 and g-C3N4 in photocatalysis are revealed. The promoting and suppressing effects of Ni-N4 coordination on g-C3N4 matrix are also discussed. The results show that the optimized SAC loading is crucial for achieving maximum efficiency in photocatalytic processes.

Design and construction of an O-Au-O coordination environment in Au single atom-doped Ti4+ defected TiO2 for an enhanced oxidative ability of lattice oxygen for Hg0 oxidation

Zhilei Guo et al.

Summary: The paper presents the design and synthesis of an Au single atom-doped TiO2 catalyst for enhanced Hg-0 oxidation. The O-Au-O coordination environment and orbital interaction were investigated using density functional theory. The synthesized Au SAC Ti1-xO2 catalyst showed significantly improved oxidation capability and resistance to SO2 and NO inhibition compared to conventional TiO2 catalysts.

High-performance photocatalytic nonoxidative conversion of methane to ethane and hydrogen by heteroatoms-engineered TiO2

Wenqing Zhang et al.

Summary: This study proposes a heteroatom engineering strategy for photocatalytic nonoxidative coupling of methane (NOCM) using Pd single atoms loaded onto TiO2 catalyst. By reducing the contribution of oxygen sites to the valence band with the construction of Pd-O-4 structure, high selectivity for C2H6 production is achieved. The photocatalytic system shows high activity, selectivity, and durability, approaching the level of thermocatalysis under mild conditions.

A facile preparation of highly dispersed ultrasmall CeO2 clusters on g-C3N4 decorated TiO2 for efficient photooxidation of Hg0

Xiaoqi Jiang et al.

Summary: This study presents a facile strategy of using g-C3N4 as an anchor to load highly dispersed ultrasmall CeO2 clusters on g-C3N4/TiO2. The photocatalyst CeO2-g-C3N4/TiO2 demonstrates a much higher photooxidation efficiency for Hg-0 compared to other catalysts. The small CeO2 clusters are anchored via strong Ce-N coordination bonds, and a combined type II and Z-scheme transport paths accelerate the separation of photogenerated electron holes.

Photoelectrochemistry of Au Nanocluster-Sensitized TiO2: Intricacy Arising from the Light-Induced Transformation of Nanoclusters into Nanoparticles

Rizwan Khan et al.

Summary: Investigating photoelectrode interfaces is challenging due to complex charge carrier pathways, and photodegradation can significantly alter interfacial properties. The photodegradation of Au nanoclusters results in the formation of photoactive Au nanoparticles that can form Schottky barriers with TiO2, affecting interfacial band structures. The injection of electrons into TiO2 and subsequent electron trapping at deep surface trap states play a vital role in the photodegradation process, while the enhancement of photocurrent is attributed to multiple overlooked effects of Au NPs.

Size effect of Au nanoparticles in Au-TiO2-x photocatalyst

Lina Lin et al.

Summary: The size of Au particles has a significant impact on the photocatalytic performance, mainly affecting the electron transfer mechanism and interface microstructure. The overall photoelectric properties of samples are determined by size effect, but the number and transport behavior of carriers at the interface fundamentally affect the photocatalytic performance.
