The Appeal of Small Molecules for Practical Nonlinear Optics

Ivan Biaggio

Summary: Research has shown that small organic molecules with a pi-conjugated system equipped with donor and acceptor groups exhibit significantly lower optical excitation energies, leading to higher quantum limits to molecular polarizabilities. Consequently, these molecules demonstrate orders of magnitude larger third-order nonlinear optical polarizabilities compared to molecules of similar size without donor-acceptor substitution. These materials, which can be deposited from the vapor phase and electric-field poled at higher temperatures, offer strong third-order nonlinear optical effects and are competitive for integrating active nonlinear optical or electro-optic functionality into advanced integrated photonics platforms.

Recent advances in non-fullerene organic photovoltaics enabled by green solvent processing

Shilin Li et al.

Summary: Solution-processed organic photovoltaic (OPV) is a new energy device with great potential in future commercial manufacturing. However, most studies on high-performance OPV have used halogenated solvents, which pollute the environment and pose risks to human health. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop low-toxic or non-toxic non-halogen solvent-processable OPV. Non-fullerene OPVs show stronger absorption, better energy level matching, and lower energy loss compared to conventional fullerene OPVs. This review discusses the research progress of non-fullerene OPV processed with different green solvents and analyzes the effects of optimization strategies on their photoelectric performance and stability. The current optimization strategy can increase the power conversion efficiency of non-fullerene OPV processed with non-halogen solvents up to 17.33%, which is close to the performance of processing with halogen-containing solvents.

Establishing design principles for emissive organic SWIR chromophores from energy gap laws

Hannah C. Friedman et al.

Summary: The paper investigates the rational design of bright near and shortwave infrared emitters, deriving an energy gap quantum yield master equation to describe the limits in SWIR quantum yields for organic chromophores. It explains the decline of Phi(F) past 900 nm through decreasing radiative rates and increasing nonradiative losses. The study also develops an energy-gap-independent metric for comparing Phi(F) of NIR/SWIR chromophores.
