Roles of Carbon Nanotube Confinement in Enhancing Second-Order Nonlinear Optical Properties of Triiodobenzene Aggregates

Takashi Yumura et al.

Summary: Dispersion-corrected density functional theory (DFT) calculations were used to investigate the stable structures of triiodobenzenes (BzI(3)) inside carbon nanotubes with different diameters, revealing the impact of nanotube confinement on guest orientation and alignment. The degree of nanotube confinement in 1 X BzI(3)@(m,m) was represented by Delta D-small values, indicating strong, medium, or weak confinement based on the calculated values. Different types of intermolecular interactions were found to operate in n X BzI(3)@(m,m) systems based on the varying degrees of nanotube confinement, with a linear alignment of guests observed in structures with strong and medium confinement.

Dye-sensitized H2 evolution from water facilitated by photoinduced electron transfer between molecules on the inside and the outside of a carbon nanotube

Tomoyuki Tajima et al.

Summary: A water-dispersible dye@SWCNT/dendrimer hybrid was created by physically modifying dye-encapsulated single-walled carbon nanotubes. In the photocatalytic H-2 evolution reaction, photoinduced electron transfer occurs between the encapsulated dye molecule inside the SWCNT and an electron-relay molecule outside, ultimately leading to the reduction of H+ to generate H-2. Despite the possibility of energy migration or charge recombination, the process proceeds smoothly, achieving an external quantum yield of 8.5% under specific light irradiation.
