The study developed a multifunctional nanoparticle that can release CO and generate ROS in the tumor microenvironment, demonstrating desirable anticancer effect and therapeutic safety.
The multifunctional MPDA/ReCO/CS/PEG nanoparticles were constructed by loading Re2(CO)10 and ultra-small Cu2-xSe into mesoporous polydopamine (MPDA) nanoparticles through the chelating effect of the catechol groups in MPDA nanoparticles and metal ions with subsequent surface modification with polyethylene glycol (PEG). The multifunctional MPDA/ReCO/CS/PEG nanoparticles enable a controlled release of CO and simultaneously generate ROS triggered by near-infrared (NIR) laser and H2O2 enriched in the tumor microenvironment. They exhibited highly desirable combined anticancer effect and superior therapeutic safety both in vitro and in vivo. The multifunctional nanoparticles mediated photothermal/chemodynamic/CO combination therapy, which can be activated at tumor sites, providing a promising strategy for cancer treatment.
