Excited state intramolecular proton transfer of 2-phenyl,3-hydroxybenzo[g]quinolones in solution and in G4 supramolecular hydrogels

Summary: The 2P3HBQ and 2HP3HBQ fluorophores exhibit well-separated dual emission peaks due to Excited State Intramolecular Proton Transfer (ESIPT), with unusually long time-constants suggesting intermolecular H-bonding with the solvent. Temperature-dependent fluorescence studies show that ESIPT rates vary significantly with temperature, indicating the prevalence of solvent fluorophore intermolecular H-bonding. ESIPT observed in the gel state differs from that in the solution state, indicating the effect of confinement on the photophysics of the gel-bound fluorophores.
