New insight into the rheological and fracture properties of PAM gels: Effect of entanglements

Hao Wu et al.

Summary: The article investigates the relationship between various mechanical properties and concentration of PAM gels, revealing that concentration has a significant impact on the plateau modulus, degree of stiffening, and fracture strain. The plateau modulus of unentangled gels is controlled by crosslinking density, while entangled gels display a power law relationship with polymer concentration. Increasing crosslinker concentration or decreasing polymer concentration enhances the degree of stiffening and reduces fracture strain. Furthermore, the contribution of gellant concentration to the fracture stress of gels is weakened as the polymer concentration exceeds the entanglement concentration.

Sealant injectivity through void space conduits to assess remediation of well cement failure

Mohammed Alkhamis et al.

Summary: The primary cement of oil and gas wells is susceptible to failure, necessitating remedial operations to restore wellbore integrity. Various materials, including cement and polymer resin, are used for wellbore integrity applications. Factors affecting injectivity of sealants, such as void size, viscosity, injection flow rate, and heterogeneity, were evaluated. Solids-free sealants like epoxy resin are recommended for wellbore remedial operations due to their Newtonian fluid behavior and ability to be injected into small voids with minimal pressure requirements.

Preparation and properties of an acid-resistant preformed particle gel for conformance control

Bobo Zhou et al.

Summary: In this study, an acid-resistant preformed particle gel (AR-PPG) was prepared using acrylamide, N,N'-methylene bisacrylamide, and dimethyldiallylammonium chloride through radical polymerization. The AR-PPG exhibited improved swelling, shearing resistance, and viscoelastic properties in acidic environments compared to conventional PPG. Furthermore, a conformance control system composed of AR-PPG dispersed in cationic polyacrylamide solution showed good dispersion stability and achieved a plugging rate of 70.8% in low permeability cores after supercritical CO2 flooding, providing a potential alternative material for plugging and conformance control in oilfields.

On the application of silica gel for mitigating CO2 leakage in CCS projects: Rheological properties and chemical stability

Sobhan Hatami et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of varying chemical compositions on the formation, viscosity, and stability of silica sol gels. It found that factors such as concentrations of SiO2, Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, and pH levels all play a role in gelation times, with complex interplay between these variables influencing the process. Additionally, empirical fits were obtained to describe the gelation times and precursor sol viscosities, showing good agreement between experimental measurements and models for predicting gelation rates in real-world applications.

A CO2-responsive anti-corrosion ethyl cellulose coating based on the pH-response mechanism

Jixing Wang et al.

Summary: A CO2-responsive coating was developed by adding a thiourea-containing nanocontainer with pH-response release property into an ethyl cellulose coating. The release rate of thiourea from the nanocontainer in the coating can adapt to the change in corrosiveness of 3.5 wt. % NaCl with different dissolved CO2 content, significantly improving the corrosion resistance of the coating in both CO2-containing and CO2-free 3.5 wt. % NaCl solutions.

Summary: The study aims to understand the environmental impact of a CO2 leak on water quality in a carbonate freshwater aquifer, as well as CO2-water-carbonate interactions. Using an Oligocene carbonate underground quarry experiment, key indicators for monitoring a gas plume during CO2 geological storage were identified, along with the importance of the interaction between CO2 and limestone.

Impact of CO2 leakage from sub-seabed carbon dioxide storage on sediment and porewater geochemistry

Anna Lichtschlag et al.

Summary: This study simulated low leakage rates of CO2 from a storage reservoir in the North Sea and found that carbonate and silicate minerals react quickly with CO2, releasing some of the CO2 and affecting the release of surrounding metals to a certain extent. However, the overall impact on the benthic environment was minimal, with no toxic metals released from the sediments. Porewater composition and temperature were effective indicators for detecting leakage, even at low CO2 leakage rates.
