Experimental study on the influence of nanoparticles on oil-based drilling fluid properties

E. I. Mikhienkova et al.

Summary: The study showed that adding nanoparticles to oil-based drilling fluids can significantly improve their properties, even with a minute concentration showing visible effects on all parameters. This may be a promising direction for further enhancing oil-based drilling fluids in the future.

Effect of nanoparticles on the performance of polymer/surfactant flooding for enhanced oil recovery: A review

Omid Tavakkoli et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively reviews the positive effects of nanoparticles (NPs) on the performance of polymer and surfactant flooding in Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR). The results show that NPs have great potential to improve the rheological properties of polymers, reduce interfacial tension, alter reservoir rock wettability towards more water-wet medium, and decrease surfactant adsorption on porous media.

Controllable regulation of emulsion stability by a pH-responsive zwitterionic/anionic surfactant system

Hairong Wu et al.

Summary: A pH-responsive zwitterionic/anionic surfactant system was proposed to improve crude oil recovery and achieve rapid demulsification of produced fluid. By adjusting the pH value, the interaction between surfactants could be controlled, allowing effective modulation of emulsification and demulsification states. The study demonstrated that varying the molar ratio of EAB to SDS and pH values could significantly impact the stability and droplet size of the emulsion.

A Novel Method of Removing Emulsion Blockage after Drilling Operations Using Thermochemical Fluid

Olalekan Alade et al.

Summary: A novel approach using heat and pressure generated from thermochemical reactions has been investigated for removing emulsion blockage induced by oil-based mud. The technology raises the formation temperature and pressure above emulsion stability levels, allowing for effective cleaning and improving permeability without damaging geological structures. Ultimately, the in-situ heat generation can mitigate emulsion blockage issues and offer environmentally friendly and efficient damage removal.

Effect of Hydrophobic Iron Oxide Nanoparticles on the Properties of Oil-Based Drilling Fluid

Muhammad Awais Ashfaq Alvi et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown the potential of hydrophobic iron oxide nanoparticles to significantly improve the performance of oil-based drilling fluids. By adding 0.5wt% iron oxide nanoparticles in hexane solution, the filtration loss in high pressure and high temperature conditions was reduced by 70%, filter cake thickness by 55%, and coefficient of friction by 39%. Additionally, the nanofluid-based drilling fluid reduced the formation of a free oil layer by 16.3% during aging at high temperature compared to the base fluid.
