Prospects and Challenges for the Spatial Quantification of the Diffusion of Fluids Containing 1H in the Pore System of Rock Cores

A. T. Krzyzak et al.

Summary: This study explores the application of diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) in the characterization of rock core samples, demonstrating its potential in studying the pore space characteristics through analysis of DT parameters and visualization results. The introduction of a new parameter, principal diffusion tracts, provides additional information to understand the microgeometry of the sample's pore network. The study also showcases the potential applications of DTI in determining pore size distribution, tortuosity, and conductivity.

A 3D FIB-SEM technique for quantitative characterization of oil shale's microstructure: A case study from the Shahejie Formation in Dongying Depression, China

Jianpeng Zhao et al.

Summary: Investigating the pore structure of shale rocks using FIB and SEM techniques revealed the presence of both organic and inorganic pores, with analysis on pore connectivity and size distributions showing mesoscale pores were abundant but with limited contribution to total pore volume, while macropores played a larger role. The findings of isolated pores being predominant in the analyzed samples are crucial for accurate petrophysical simulations and understanding the intrinsic properties of oil shales.

Investigating NMR-based absolute and relative permeability models of sandstone using digital rock techniques

Weichao Yan et al.

Summary: This study investigated NMR-based permeability models of sandstone, proposing three types of pores and incorporating them into the permeability calculations. By applying the LBM method and fluid flow simulations, it was found that fast-flowing free water pores have the highest contribution to absolute permeability. Five relative permeability calculation models were also studied, with the best relationship found between the T2 spectrum and relative permeability curve being the pore size distribution index. The obtained results indicated that traditional models combined with new methods are high-precision models for calculating NMR-based permeabilities in sandstone reservoirs.

Influence of pore structural properties on gas hydrate saturation and permeability: A coupled pore-scale modelling and X-ray computed tomography method

Jianmeng Sun et al.

Summary: This study utilized a three-dimensional micro X-ray computed tomography dataset to investigate the influence of gas hydrate saturation on pore structural properties and permeability. The results showed that grain-coating gas hydrate formed at low saturations plays a crucial role in reducing permeability, while pore-filling and/or cementing gas hydrate become dominating at higher saturations.

Fractal Properties of Various Clay Minerals Obtained from SEM Images

Naser Golsanami et al.

Summary: Clay minerals and dissolution holes complicate the pore structure of gas hydrate-bearing sediments and sandstone reservoir rocks, adding numerous micropores of varying sizes. The fractal properties of clay groups and dissolution holes, including fractal dimension and lacunarity values, were analyzed to understand the impact on reservoir properties and fluid flow dynamics. The results provide insight for developing improved fractal models for calculating producible oil and gas in reservoirs.

Numerical upscaling of multi-mineral digital rocks: Electrical conductivities of tight sandstones

Xuefeng Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel upscaling method is proposed to accurately estimate the electrical conductivity of tight sandstones by constructing complex digital rocks. Through multi-scale imaging techniques, fine mineral structures and micro pores are revealed, allowing for the calculation of effective conductivity for each mineral phase and estimation of bulk electrical conductivity. The contributions of fluids and clay minerals to the bulk electrical properties are implicitly incorporated, and the method is validated by experimental measurements of formation factors.
