Gut Microbiome: A Potential Modifiable Risk Factor in Biliary Atresia

Vandana Jain et al.

Summary: Biliary atresia (BA) is a fibro-obliterative condition affecting infants, with surgery achieving bile flow restoration in some cases but cirrhosis and associated complications remaining common. Liver transplantation remains a frequent outcome, and advances in molecular technology have enabled characterization of gut microbiota genes. The gut microbiome plays a crucial role in host metabolism, nutrition, and immune function.

Characteristics of the Gut Microbiome and IL-13/TGF-β1 Mediated Fibrosis in Post-Kasai Cholangitis of Biliary Atresia

Lingdu Meng et al.

Summary: The study found that gut microbiome diversity was lower in patients after Kasai procedure, with a higher relative abundance of Klebsiella. Patients who developed cholangitis within 1 month after discharge tended to have a simpler gut microbiome composition dominated by Klebsiella. The establishment of an in vitro model using Klebsiella showed gene expression patterns related to infection, apoptosis, and fibrosis in post-Kasai cholangitis.

Gut Microbiota Composition of Biliary Atresia Patients Before Kasai Portoenterostomy Associates With Long-term Outcome

Summary: The gut microbiota composition of biliary atresia patients before Kasai portoenterostomy is associated with treatment outcomes, with lower alpha diversity correlating with clearance of jaundice.

Association of Gut Microbiota and Metabolites With Disease Progression in Children With Biliary Atresia

Wei Song et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the gut microbiota structure in patients with biliary atresia was disturbed in both early and later stages, and specific bacteria such as Klebsiella, Streptococcus, Veillonella, and Enterococcus may be associated with disease progression, particularly in terms of metabolic dysregulation.
