Metallaphotoredox: The Merger of Photoredox and Transition Metal Catalysis

Amy Y. Chan et al.

Summary: The merger of photoredox catalysis with transition metal catalysis, known as metallaphotoredox catalysis, has become an important part of synthetic methodology. It combines the bond formation capability of transition metal catalysis with the utility of photoinduced electron and energy transfer processes. Photocatalytic substrate activation allows the involvement of simple starting materials in metal-mediated bond-forming processes, while electron or energy transfer with organometallic intermediates provides a complementary activation mode to traditional catalytic platforms.

Switchable, Reagent-Controlled Diastereodivergent Photocatalytic Carbocyclisation of Imine-Derived α-Amino Radicals

J. Andrew P. Maitland et al.

Summary: This study describes a reagent-controlled stereodivergent carbocyclisation of aryl aldimine-derived, photocatalytically generated alpha-amino radicals possessing adjacent conjugated alkenes. The reaction can afford either bicyclic or tetracyclic products, with high selectivity and good-to-excellent yields. Computational analysis using DFT revealed the reaction pathway and mechanistic rationale behind this finely balanced yet readily controlled photocatalytic system.

Fused chromeno and quinolino[1,8]naphthyridines: Synthesis and biological evaluation as topoisomerase I inhibitors and antiproliferative agents

Endika Martin-Encinas et al.

Summary: The synthesis and behavior of 1,8-naphthyridine derivatives fused with other heterocycles, such as chromenes and quinolines, as topoisomerase I inhibitors were studied. It was found that quinolino[4,3-b][1,8]naphthyridine derivatives exhibited strong inhibitory activity against topoisomerase I enzyme, similar to camptothecin.
