An in-silico analysis of electrically evoked responses of midget and parasol retinal ganglion cells in different retinal regions

Xiaoyu Song et al.

Summary: A computational model was developed to assess neural activity in different eccentricities within the human retina. Simulations showed that midget and parasol retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) have region-specific excitation differences under preferred electrode sizes. Smaller electrodes exhibit a higher range of controllable stimulation parameters. Fine-tuning the stimulation amplitude and electrode size can control retinal outputs.

Summary: This study developed an anatomically accurate 3D model of RGC populations within the human central retina and demonstrated the potential for an epiretinal hexapolar configuration to achieve consistent, spatially confined retinal responses even within the unique and neuron-dense foveal region.

Correlated Activity in the Degenerate Retina Inhibits Focal Response to Electrical Stimulation

Jungryul Ahn et al.

Summary: Retinal degeneration results in abnormal rewiring of retinal ganglion cells, leading to a more strongly coupled retinal network. This widespread distribution of electrically evoked RGC spikes may explain the reduced visual acuity in patients implanted with retinal prostheses.

Stage-Dependent Changes of Visual Function and Electrical Response of the Retina in the rd10 Mouse Model

Seongkwang Cha et al.

Summary: Understanding the physiological features of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) in different stages of retinal degeneration (RD) is crucial for the successful development of retinal prostheses. This study used rd10 mice to investigate RGC responses to light stimulation and electrical stimulation across various postnatal ages. The results showed a decrease in RGC response with degeneration and a difference in the pattern of response between ON and OFF RGCs. The findings suggest the importance of stage-dependent stimulation strategies for retinal prosthesis development.

Electrical response of retinal ganglion cells in an N-methyl-N-nitrosourea-induced retinal degeneration porcine model

Seongkwang Cha et al.

Summary: By studying electrically evoked retinal responses in a pig RD model, it was found that degenerative retinas required higher charge than normal retinas to generate similar responses. In cases of severe degeneration, it may be challenging to restore patient vision through electrical stimulation.

Summary: The text reviews the technological and biological obstacles of implementing visual prosthetic devices, highlighting the significant technical challenges and gaps in neuroscience. It emphasizes that further optimization of prosthetic devices alone will not achieve markedly improved visual outcomes without significant advances in our understanding of neuroscience.

Composition of the Inner Nuclear Layer in Human Retina

Rania A. Masri et al.

Summary: This study measured the composition of the inner nuclear layer (INL) in human retina and found that while the absolute density of cell populations varies across the retina, their proportions remain relatively constant. Cone bipolar cells dominate the central retina, with a decrease in proportion towards the periphery balanced by an increase in rod bipolar cells. Despite regional differences in cell density, the neuronal makeup of the INL remains consistent.
