New theoretical investigation of mechanism, kinetics, and toxicity in the degradation of dimetridazole and ornidazole by hydroxyl radicals in aqueous phase

Junfang Yao et al.

Summary: DMZ and ONZ residues in the water environment can be degraded by hydroxyl-initiated oxidation, resulting in degradation products that may be toxic to aquatic organisms in the first step but generally harmless in subsequent steps, with some products showing potential developmental toxicant or mutagenicity.

N, N -diethyl-m-toluamide (DEET) degradation by •OH and SO4•--assisted AOPs in wastewater treatment: Theoretical studies into mechanisms, kinetics and toxicity

Mengmeng Xu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the mechanism, kinetics, and toxicity of insect repellent DEET in water environment using quantum chemical calculations. The results showed that the degradation of DEET initiated by •OH and SO4• from advanced oxidation processes had good performance. The degradation of DEET was mainly caused by hydrogen abstraction and addition.

Theoretical insight into the degradation of diclofenac by hydroxyl and sulfate radicals in aqueous-phase: Mechanisms, kinetics and eco-toxicity

Jiaoxue Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the transformation mechanisms, kinetics, and toxicity of diclofenac in the persulfate oxidation process. The results showed that the reactivity of the benzylic position of diclofenac was higher than that of the chlorinated aromatic ring, indicating that the hydroxyl radical and persulfate radical were more likely to react at the benzylic position. Kinetic calculations revealed a positive correlation between degradation rate constants and temperature. Furthermore, the toxicological analysis demonstrated a reduced toxicity level in most degradation products, with the hydrolysates remaining toxic.

Summary: This study investigated the mechanistic details of TCEP degradation promoted by (OH)-O· using density functional theory (DFT) method. The results showed that in the initial step, energy barriers of the hydrogen abstraction pathways were no more than 7 kcal/mol.

Theoretical Calculation on the Reaction Mechanisms, Kinetics and Toxicity of Acetaminophen Degradation Initiated by Hydroxyl and Sulfate Radicals in the Aqueous Phase

Mengmeng Xu et al.

Summary: The study utilized theoretical calculations to investigate the degradation mechanisms, kinetics, and ecotoxicity of acetaminophen (AAP) initiated by & BULL;OH and SO4 & BULL;-. The results showed that radical adduct formation (RAF) mechanism takes precedence over formal hydrogen atom transfer (FHAT) mechanism in reactions with AAP. Total rate constants for the reactions were determined to be 3.23 x 10(9) M-1 s(-1) for & BULL;OH and 4.60 x 10(10) M-1 s(-1) for SO4 & BULL;-, indicating high removal efficiency.

Aqueous picloram degradation by hydroxyl radicals: Unveiling mechanism, kinetics, and ecotoxicity through experimental and theoretical approaches

Flavio O. Sanches-Neto et al.

Summary: Pesticides play a key role in agricultural production, but their persistence in aquatic environments raises concerns about adverse effects on human health and the environment. This study used quantum chemistry and computational toxicology to analyze the mechanism, kinetics, and toxicity of picloram degradation, revealing potential harm of picloram and its degradation products, as well as their susceptibility to photolysis in sunlight. The results provide important insights for risk assessment and experimental research in aquatic environments.

Antioxidant activity of Trolox derivatives toward methylperoxyl radicals: thermodynamic and kinetic theoretical study

Anes El-hadj Said et al.

Summary: The study explored the thermodynamic and kinetic aspects of Trolox derivatives reactions with methylperoxyl radical CH3OO· using density functional theory. It found that HAT is the preferred mechanism in lipid media while SPLHAT is the most favored mechanism in water. The calculated rate constants showed that the antioxidant activities of the Trolox derivatives are significantly faster than that of the reference system Trolox.

Removal of Ampicillin by Heterogeneous Photocatalysis: Combined Experimental and DFT Study

LenkaY Belhacova et al.

Summary: The study found that the structural-textural properties of TiO2 photocatalysts are correlated with their photocatalytic performance in ampicillin abatement. Interestingly, even in the dark, the concentration of ampicillin decreased, especially with the smallest nanoparticles present. The smallest nanoparticles in photocatalysis achieved a high degree of antibiotic mineralization.

Photodegradation kinetics of organophosphorous with hydroxyl radicals: Experimental and theoretical study

Seyda Aydogdu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the photocatalytic degradation reactions of organophosphorus compounds using both experimental and quantum chemical methods. Under UV-A irradiation, TiO2 as a photocatalyst proved effective in degrading the OPs. Theoretical calculations and transition state theory were used to model reaction pathways and determine reaction rates, which aligned well with experimental results.
