A method to apply Zavitsas' aqueous electrolyte model to multicomponent solutions and its equivalence to Zdanovskii's rule

Jacob G. Reynolds

Summary: Zavitsas developed an aqueous electrolyte thermodynamic model and successfully applied it to multicomponent solutions by using water activity as a basis for predictions. Experimental results showed that the model performed well for the CsBr-KNO3-H2O and CsCl-KNO3-H2O systems under specific conditions.

Extending Zavitsas' hydration model to the thermodynamics of solute mixtures in water

Jacob G. Reynolds et al.

Summary: This study derives equations for calculating the activity of solutes in Zavitsas' hydration model and validates its accuracy by predicting solubilities in aqueous electrolyte solutions. It demonstrates that the hydration model can accurately model the activities and solubilities of solutes in addition to water.

Properties of aqueous solutions. A treatise against osmotic and activity coefficients

Andreas A. Zavitsas

Summary: The current common belief that most water solutions do not behave ideally is incorrect due to a misunderstanding of their behavior. The invention of osmotic and activity coefficients, which supposedly measure deviations from ideality, is to blame for this misconception. There are conflicting definitions of ideal solutions, and they have created an undeserved sense of mystery and complexity surrounding the behavior of aqueous solutions. Adherence to Raoult's law and understanding the solute's affinity for water are the keys to demonstrating ideal behavior.

Pauling's rules for oxide-based minerals: A re-examination based on quantum mechanical constraints and modern applications of bond-valence theory to Earth materials

Gerald Gibbs et al.

Summary: Since their introduction in 1929, Pauling's five rules have been widely used in various scientific disciplines to explain and predict the arrangements of atoms in different materials. However, recent research has challenged the predictive power of these rules and highlighted the need for quantum mechanical calculations to complement them. This article discusses the limitations of Pauling's rules and presents a modified version of the first rule. It also explores the applications of bond-valence theory in understanding Earth materials.

Ion hydration controls self-diffusion in multicomponent aqueous electrolyte solutions of NaNO2-NaOH-H2O

Jacob G. Reynolds et al.

Summary: Determining the diffusive properties of multicomponent electrolyte mixtures is challenging. In this study, the diffusive properties of aqueous mixtures of sodium hydroxide and sodium nitrite were investigated using Zavitsas' model. The results showed that the amount of free water was linearly correlated with the self-diffusion coefficients of proton and sodium ions. The rotational reorientation times of nitrite oxyanions were also found to be related to the concentration of free water, suggesting that diffusion through bulk water may be faster than diffusion around electrolytes.

Local stress within a granular molecular solvent matrix, a mechanism for individual ion hydration

Aaron D. Wilson et al.

Summary: The activity of water is significant in natural systems and directed processes. A new solution model that approximates the hydration of individual ions has been used to gain a better understanding of water activity. The calculations of individual ion hydration values based on a matrix of hydration data for complete salts provide insights into the dissolution properties of ions and the activity of water.

Examining the Hofmeister Series through Activation Energies: Water Diffusion in Aqueous Alkali-Halide Solutions

Ashley K. Borkowski et al.

Summary: In this study, the impact of different halide anions on the water diffusion coefficient and activation energy was investigated through molecular dynamics simulations. It was found that water diffusion accelerates down the halide group from F- to I-. The behavior of the diffusion activation energy is complex, with Na+ showing a larger effect than any of the anions, and water molecules in the ion's solvation shell exhibiting a decrease in activation energy.

Summary: The study deconstructs ion-specific perturbations to water structure and dynamics in aqueous systems using neutron scattering, NMR, and computational modeling, shedding light on the origins of bulk thermodynamic properties. The research finds that ions induce mostly local perturbations to water structure and dynamics, with the enthalpy of hydration being influenced by the ions' charge density.

Raoult was right after all: Statistical mechanics derivation and volumetric validation

Summary: This study used statistical mechanics to derive the Gibbs free energy of the solute-water system and applied the model to data for a number of sugars, fitting concentration-activity data accurately. The model can also predict the number of water molecules bound to the solute and the number of free water molecules, showing remarkable agreement with literature hydration number data.

Modeling solution vapor equilibria with solvation and solute assembly

Aaron D. Wilson et al.

Summary: By combining solvation and solute assembly, the solution vapor-liquid equilibrium data was effectively modeled without the use of solute activity coefficients. The method assumes that solvent activity is governed by Raoult's law idealism, and solution behavior is dictated by stochastically consistent speciation.

Mass action model of solution activity via speciation by solvation and ion pairing equilibria

Aaron D. Wilson et al.

Summary: The study presents a mechanistic solution model based on mass action equilibria, describing the solution activity of neutral, symmetric, and asymmetric salt solutions over a wide range of concentrations. The model uses solvation and ion pairing to correlate solute and solvent concentrations to a solution's vapor pressure according to Raoult's law. Molecular dynamics studies support a decline in solvation with increased concentration, with the dominant factor changing based on concentration. This speciation-based model is distinct from established electrostatic-based electrolyte theories and provides a direct link between experimental data and modeled speciated concentrations.

A Review of Sodium Nitrite Solubility in Water and Physical Properties of the Saturated Solutions

Summary: This study reviews the solubility of sodium nitrite (NaNO2) in water, providing data on solubility, electrical conductivity, viscosity, and density at different temperatures. The results show that concentrated NaNO2 solutions behave more like molten salt. A thermodynamic-based solubility model was developed to further understand the solubility of NaNO2 in water.

The electrostatic origins of specific ion effects: quantifying the Hofmeister series for anions

Kasimir P. Gregory et al.

Summary: Specific ion effects play a crucial role in the interactions between biological molecules and the support of life, with calculations based on Coulomb interactions effectively quantifying the Hofmeister series. Further research has explored the impact of anion effects in aqueous and non-aqueous environments. Additionally, there is a fundamental asymmetry in the origins of specific ion effects for anions and cations due to competing non-Coulombic phenomena.
