Simulation of deep eutectic solvents: Progress to promises

Caroline Velez et al.

Summary: Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are mixtures of compounds with significant melting point depressions. The discovery of DESs has been a major breakthrough, benefiting various fields with their low cost and adjustable physiochemical properties. However, customizing DESs for specific applications can be challenging due to the expense and time required. Fast computational tools capable of predicting DES properties from molecular structure are needed. Quantum mechanical (QM) methods, classical molecular dynamics (MD) methods, and machine learning (ML) algorithms have contributed to the understanding and prediction of DES properties. This review highlights the computational achievements and discusses the strengths and drawbacks of the methodologies used.

Changes in the Local Conformational States Caused by Simple Na+ and K+ Ions in Polyelectrolyte Simulations: Comparison of Seven Force Fields with and without NBFIX and ECC Corrections

Natalia Lukasheva et al.

Summary: Electrostatic interactions play a crucial role in the behavior of polyelectrolyte molecules. This study investigated the behavior of anionic polyelectrolytes in water solutions using molecular dynamics simulations. Comparisons were made between different force fields, and the limitations and strengths of these force fields were determined based on experimental data. The results showed that the size and dynamics of the molecules depend on the models for the counterions, and the local structures and dynamics are sensitive to dihedral angle parameterization. Recommendations were made based on the findings.

Suling Liu et al.

Summary: This study utilized carboxylic acid-based deep eutectic solvents for pretreating cellulose, resulting in the production of cellulose nanofibers with widths less than 100 nm through simultaneous esterification modifications. Esterification modifications prevented over-hydrolysis and dissolution of cellulose while maintaining the cellulose I crystal structure. The esterified cellulose nanofibers showed improved dispersibility and interfacial compatibility with polylactic acid, leading to mechanical enhancement of CNF/PLA composites.

Volumetric and compressibility studies on aqueous mixtures of deep eutectic solvents based on choline chloride and carboxylic acids at different temperatures: Experimental, theoretical and computational approach

Omish Sethi et al.

Summary: The binary mixtures of DESs with water exhibit unique thermodynamic properties due to varying intermolecular interactions, with negative excess molar volumes (V-m(E)) attributed to stronger hydrogen bond interactions and efficient molecular packing. Analysis using the Prigogine-Flory-Patterson (PFP) theory satisfactorily explains the volumetric behavior of the binary mixtures. Further studies using Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and evaluations of isentropic compressibility (k(s)) and excess isentropic compressibility (k(s)(E)) contribute to a better understanding of the interactions and potential applications of DESs.
