Separation of lithium, nickel, manganese, and cobalt from waste lithium-ion batteries using electrodialysis

Ka Ho Chan et al.

Summary: With the expansion of the lithium-ion battery market and the increasing awareness of environmental protection, the development of green and sustainable technologies for recycling waste lithium-ion batteries has become urgent. This study focuses on the separation and recovery of valuable metals from postconsumer lithium-ion batteries using electrodialysis. The results show that electrodialysis coupled with complexation using EDTA can effectively separate and recover lithium, nickel, manganese, and cobalt with high purity.

Removal of hexavalent chromium by polyethyleneimine impregnated activated carbon: intra-particle diffusion, kinetics and isotherms

Thobile Masinga et al.

Summary: This study investigates the use of PEI solution-impregnated activated carbon as a potential adsorbent for the removal of toxic Cr(VI) from water. The experimental results show that high removal efficiency can be achieved at pH 3, a contact time of 120 minutes, and a dosage concentration of 1 g L-1. Kinetic and isotherm models were applied to analyze the data, and a maximum adsorption capacity of 114 mg g-1 was obtained.

Adsorption kinetics and isotherms of binary metal ion aqueous solution using untreated venus shell

Attaso Khamwichit et al.

Summary: Biosorption, as an effective and eco-friendly technology for heavy metal removal from wastewater, has received much attention. In this study, untreated venus shells (UVS) were used as a biosorbent to investigate the adsorption behavior of Cu(II) and Zn(II) ions. The results showed that the pseudo-second order kinetics and intraparticle diffusion model provided the best fit to the experimental data, and the Freundlich model was the most suitable to describe the equilibrium adsorption. The adsorption of Cu(II) and Zn(II) onto UVS may involve a chemisorption mechanism.

Microrecycled Co3O4 from waste lithium-ion battery: Synthesis, characterisation and implication in environmental application

Rumana Hossain et al.

Summary: This study explores microrecycling based techniques for synthesising phase pure porous Co3O4 to achieve environmental outcomes in the manufacturing and recycling of hazardous spent Lithium-ion batteries. The study finds that by utilizing the cathode and anode materials of spent batteries, nanosized crystal grains and a large specific surface area of Co3O4 can be produced, along with a valuable co-product of Lithium in the form of Li2CO3. Additionally, the synthesised Co3O4 can serve as a catalyst for toxic dye degradation, providing an opportunity to create a resource from waste and treat other waste in the environment.

Mechanism of Cu2+ ions uptake process by synthetic NaA zeolite from aqueous solution: Characterization, Kinetic, intra-crystalline diffusion and thermodynamic studies

Nibou Djamel et al.

Summary: The study examined the removal of Cu2+ ions onto synthetic zeolite NaA from aqueous solution through batch experiments. The Langmuir adsorption isotherm was found to fit best, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 202.76 mg/g. The kinetic parameters were calculated and the pseudo-first order model was determined to have the best fit according to the Akaike's information criteria. Additionally, the diffusion coefficients of Cu2+ ions through the Zeolite NaA were investigated using a corrected function and weighting coefficient based on the semi-empirical Fick's law.

A novel approach to recover lead oxide from spent lead acid batteries by desulfurization and crystallization in sodium hydroxide solution after sulfation

Kui Huang et al.

Summary: A novel approach to recover lead oxide from spent lead acid batteries by desulfurization and crystallization in sodium hydroxide solution after sulfation was proposed. The recovery ratio and purity of lead oxide were 95.72% and 95.31% under the optimal conditions, showing great potential for industrial application. Compared to pyrometallurgy and traditional hydrometallurgy, this approach greatly shortens the process flow, reduces energy consumption and secondary pollution.
