Understanding the enhanced production of poly-aromatic hydrocarbons during the pyrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass components under pressurized entrained-flow conditions

Tawanda Matamba et al.

Summary: The entrained-flow pressurized pyrolysis of lignin, cellulose, and xylan was studied to investigate the composition and reaction mechanisms of pyrolysis products. The results showed that increasing pyrolysis pressure and temperature can promote the generation of PAHs with a decrease in other components. The mechanism of PAH formation was proposed to involve ring growth via Diels-Alder cycloaddition reaction pathways and hydrogen abstraction/C2H2 addition.

Quantification of PAH concentrations in premixed turbulent flames crossing the soot inception limit

H. Shariatmadar et al.

Summary: In this study, the impact of flame temperature, equivalence ratio, and strain rate on PAH concentrations in premixed turbulent ethylene flames crossing the soot inception limit is quantified. It is found that the rate of strain exerts a dominant influence on the growth in PAH concentrations.

Molecular Dynamics Study of the Aggregation Behavior of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon Molecules in n-Heptane-Toluene Mixtures: Assessing the Heteroatom Content Effect

Luna Ramirez et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the aggregation behavior of four PA3-type asphaltene molecules dissolved in three different solvents using molecular dynamics simulations. Results showed that molecules with heteroatoms exhibited a stronger tendency to aggregate in n-heptane. The inclusion of heteroatoms increased the polarity and planarity of the molecules, enhancing the aggregation tendency in all solvents, especially in n-heptane.

Coarse-grained molecular dynamics study of the self-assembly of polyphilic bolaamphiphiles using the SAFT-γ Mie force field

Maziar Fayaz-Torshizi et al.

Summary: In this study, a methodology for parametrizing coarse grained molecular models for liquid crystalline bolaamphiphiles (BAs) is outlined. The approach is based on the use of the Statistical Associating Fluid Theory (SAFT) and is used to characterize symmetric and asymmetric swallow-tailed BAs. The simulations reveal that branching of the side chain of BAs affects the formation and morphology of liquid crystal mesophases.
