Wetting and electro-wetting behaviors of [Bmim] [Bf4] ionic liquid droplet on lyophobic and lyophilic solid substrates

Fenhong Song et al.

Summary: Molecular dynamic simulation was used to investigate the wetting and electro-wetting behavior of nanodroplets of ionic liquid on a silicon solid substrate, as well as the influence of solid wettability and temperature on the wetting phenomenon. The results indicate that the equilibrium contact angle decreases with increasing solid wettability and temperature. When the nanodroplet wets a lyophilic surface, the effect of temperature is more pronounced. The droplet exhibits asymmetric electro-wetting on the lyophobic surface under the applied electric field, and this asymmetry diminishes with increasing energy parameter. The redistribution of cationic and anionic particles on the first wetting layer is found to be the main factor influencing the wetting behaviors.

Experimental and theoretical study of electrowetting dynamics on slippery lubricant-infused porous surfaces

Xiaodong He et al.

Summary: This study investigates the dynamic behaviors of droplet electrowetting on slippery lubricant-infused porous surfaces (SLIPS). Experimental and numerical analysis reveal that the droplet always spreads smoothly to the equilibrium state without overshooting on SLIPS. The increase of applied voltage leads to overdamping of the droplet, with the settling time proportional to the 0.9th power of the electrowetting number. Additionally, it is found that the droplet spreads slowly due to the dominance of viscous dissipation of the oil-water interface with increasing silicone oil viscosity. The friction coefficient is found to be nearly proportional to the 1/6th power of oil viscosity, while being minimally influenced by applied voltage and oil thickness.

Droplet three-dimension manipulation in parallel liquid-infused membrane plates configuration

Xiaodong He et al.

Summary: This paper demonstrated the 3D manipulation of droplets between parallel liquid-infused membrane plates with patterned electrodes by controlling electrical DC signals. The study revealed the asymmetrical electrowetting behaviors of droplets between the plates and analyzed the vertical transport of deionized water droplets with electrostatic force. Experimental results showed that droplets moved faster with higher applied voltage but excessive voltage could lead to irregular droplet behavior. The research provides insights for high-throughput analysis and integrated devices on digital microfluidic chips.

Summary: The research found that molecular interactions between two contacting liquids can be manipulated by implementing nanostructured substrates, leading to water repellency and addressing the issue of oil depletion. This offers insights into the molecular principles for controlling nanostructures to improve the performance of slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPS).

Roughness on liquid-infused surfaces induced by capillary waves

Johan Sundin et al.

Summary: Liquid-infused surfaces show promise in reducing friction, fouling, and icing in laminar and turbulent flows, but can experience failure due to capillary waves inducing roughness effects that increase drag in turbulent environments. Energy transfer from turbulent flows to the LIS is explained by the presence of negative curvature in the mean flow at the critical layer, with relations provided to determine whether a LIS behaves as a smooth or rough surface in turbunlent flows based on groove width, Weber number, and friction Reynolds number.

Cloaked Droplets on Lubricant-Infused Surfaces: Union of Constant Mean Curvature Interfaces Dictated by Thin-Film Tension

Madhu Ranjan Gunjan et al.

Summary: A mean curvature-based framework is presented for modeling cloaked droplets on lubricant-infused surfaces, considering the cloaking film tension and disjoining pressure. The shape of small droplets on LIS obeys a fundamental mean curvature relation that changes depending on lubrication regimes and cloak status. The study validates the framework with experimental data on droplet profiles, as well as demonstrates the modeling of floating droplets on LISs and the quantification of the effect of disjoining pressure on interfacial profiles.

Apparent contact angle of drops on liquid infused surfaces: geometric interpretation

Ciro Semprebon et al.

Summary: In this theoretical investigation, we explored the apparent contact angle of drops on liquid infused surfaces and found that the rotation of the Neumann triangle at the lubricant-drop-gas contact line contributes to the variation in the apparent contact angle. We also derived linear and quadratic corrections to the apparent contact angle based on power series expansion in terms of pressure differences between the lubricant, drop, and gas phases. These expressions are simpler and more compact compared to previous research by Semprebon et al.
