Quantitative analysis of grain boundary diffusion, segregation and precipitation at a sub-nanometer scale

Zirong Peng et al.

Summary: Grain boundaries are common microstructural imperfections in polycrystalline and nanocrystalline materials, affecting their properties and stabilities. Research has found that fast diffusion primarily occurs in the core region of grain boundaries, while segregated solute atoms occupy a larger spatial range. The formation of secondary phase nuclei at matrix grain boundaries is influenced by their complex three-dimensional topology.

Creep-fatigue interaction and damage behavior in 9-12%Cr steel under stress-controlled cycling at elevated temperature: Effects of holding time and loading rate

Zhi Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the creep fatigue behavior of 9-12%Cr steel under stress-controlled cycling at elevated temperature, considering most previous tests were conducted under strain-controlled mode. The effects of holding time and loading rate on deformation and damage behavior were particularly focused. The results showed that a significant creep ratcheting was generally observed in the creep-fatigue tests with the stress ratio of -1. Ratcheting strain and creep damage progressed faster with longer holding time or lower loading rate, leading to a decrease in the number of cycles to creep-fatigue failure.

On the mechanical properties and fracture analysis of polymer nanocomposites reinforced by functionalized silicon carbide nanotubes: A molecular dynamics investigation

M. Eghbalian et al.

Summary: The mechanical characteristics of reinforced polymer nanocomposites with Hydrogen (H)- and Fluorine (F)functionalized silicon carbide nanotubes (H-and F-fSiCNTs) are investigated using molecular dynamics simulations. It is found that by increasing the degree of functionalization, the maximum stress, maximum strain, elastic modulus, and strain energy of the materials decrease. Incorporating fSiCNTs into the polymer matrix leads to a significant improvement in the ultimate strength of nanocomposites compared to pure polymer.

Summary: This study investigates the interactions between single-wall carbon nanotubes and three different anticancer drugs using computer modeling approaches. The results show that the physicochemical characteristics of the drugs influence their affinity towards the carbon nanotubes, and a diameter of 20.3 angstrom is found to be the most favorable for encapsulating the drugs.

Anping Hua et al.

Summary: The reversibility of the representative Sigma 11(113) grain boundary migration in copper bicrystals under cyclic shear strongly depends on their grain sizes, with a transition mechanism from fully reversible disconnection-mediated migration to irreversible structural damage. The study also developed a refined disconnection model considering grain size to predict migration behavior and interpret the forming mechanism of disconnection pair grooving (DPG).

Loading Direction-Dependent Mechanical Properties of Columnar Polycrystal: A Molecular Dynamics Study

Hua Zhu et al.

Summary: Through compression tests using molecular dynamics simulations, the mechanical properties and plastic deformation behaviors of columnar polycrystal materials were studied. The results showed that different inclined angles between the orientation of grains and loading direction led to anisotropic mechanical properties, with differences in yield stress and flow stress among the tested samples. These differences were attributed to geometric constraints of grain boundaries and the available slip systems of different grains.

Strain controlled fatigue response of large-scale perfect and defect nickel nanowires: A molecular dynamics study

Natraj Yedla

Summary: In this study, the response of nickel nanowires to cyclic deformation under different strain amplitudes was investigated. It was found that slip lines or slip bands do not appear on the NW's surface at strain amplitudes below 0.04, and compressive stress is higher than tensile stress. The width of the stress-strain loops increases with both strain amplitude and cycles due to softening, and no fracture occurred even after 1000 cycles of cyclic deformation.

Molecular dynamics simulation-based study of creep-ratcheting behavior of nanocrystalline aluminum

Pokula Narendra Babu et al.

Summary: In this study, molecular dynamics simulations were used to investigate the creep-ratcheting deformation behavior of nanocrystalline aluminum with an average grain size of 8 nm. The influence of deformation temperature on creep-ratcheting behavior was observed, with differences in structural evolution and microstructural changes at different temperatures affecting the process. Moreover, the highest dislocation density was found for room temperature creep-ratcheting deformation, and certain dislocations were identified as driving factors for the process.
