Mechanism of Permselectivity Enhancement in Polyelectrolyte-Dense Nanofiltration Membranes via Surfactant-Assembly Intercalation

Yuanzhe Liang et al.

Summary: Intercalating surfactant self-assemblies in the polyelectrolyte multilayer (PEM) can significantly enhance the performance of salt-rejecting dense NF membranes by reducing PEM thickness, increasing pore size, improving surface hydrophilicity, and increasing water permeance without compromising solute rejection. This approach may become universally applicable and cost-effective for enhancing the performance of PEM NF membranes.

Salt and Water Transport in Reverse Osmosis Membranes: Beyond the Solution-Diffusion Model

Li Wang et al.

Summary: Understanding the salt-water separation mechanisms of reverse osmosis (RO) membranes is critical for the further development and optimization of RO technology. In this study, a solution-friction model is developed to describe the intricate transport mechanisms of water molecules and ions through the membrane. Experimental measurements validate the model, showing strong dependence of salt permeability on feed salt concentration and applied pressure, in stark contrast to the widely used solution-diffusion (SD) model.

Influence of Salt Concentration on Hydrated Polymer Relative Permittivity and State of Water Properties

Kevin Chang et al.

Summary: The exposure to aqueous electrolytes has a significant impact on the hydrated polymer's dielectric properties. Increased salt concentration leads to polymer swelling, enhanced ion sorption, and higher static permittivity, in contrast to its effect on aqueous electrolyte solutions.

High-impact innovations for high-salinity membrane desalination

Alexander Dudchenko et al.

Summary: This work proposes a suite of methods based on process-based cost optimization models to address the complexities of membrane-separation processes in desalination technology, aiming to improve efficiency and reduce costs. By conducting parametric sensitivity analysis on component performance and cost, the study guides the selection of materials and manufacturing methods for lowering system costs and identifying high-impact innovation trajectories.
