Sulfonated lignin intercalated graphene oxide membranes for efficient proton conduction

Yiqin Liu et al.

Summary: By incorporating sulfonated lignin as an intercalator, highly conductive graphene oxide/sulfonated lignin membranes were prepared. These membranes exhibited high proton conductivity and maximum power density, attributed to the abundant sulfonic acid groups and ether bonds providing additional proton transfer sites, as well as the continuous proton transfer network.

Thermally rearranged covalent organic framework with flame-retardancy as a high safety Li-ion solid electrolyte

Zhifang Wang et al.

Summary: Solid polymer electrolytes show promise in solving safety issues in lithium ion batteries, but most materials are flammable. A thermal-responsive COF material with flame-retardant properties and high ionic conductivity was designed by incorporating polyethylene glycol and Li salt. This strategy opens new possibilities for stable COFs and flame-retardant materials in energy-related applications.

Precise Molecular-Level Modification of Nafion with Bismuth Oxide Clusters for High-performance Proton-Exchange Membranes

Bailing Liu et al.

Summary: By precisely hybridizing nano-scaled bismuth oxide clusters into Nafion, a high-performance hybrid membrane, Nafion-Bi-12-3 %, was fabricated, showing excellent proton conductivity and mechanical stability ideal for high-performance PEM fuel cells. Molecular dynamics simulation was employed to clarify the structural properties and assembly mechanisms of the hybrid membrane at the molecular level. The hybrid membrane exhibited a maximum current density of 432.7 mA cm(-2) and power density of 110.2 mW cm(-2) for direct methanol fuel cells, providing new insights into the design of functional polymer electrolyte membranes through polyoxometalate hybridization.

Sulfonation of porous materials and their proton conductivity

Michael Furtmair et al.

Summary: Micro- and mesoporous materials have gained increasing interest due to their tunable properties. Among them, ordered mesoporous silica, periodic mesoporous organosilicas, zeolites, metal organic frameworks, and covalent organic frameworks are the most relevant solid state proton conductors. Their high specific surface area allows for the introduction of sulfonic acid groups for solid state acid formation, which finds applications in catalysis and proton conduction.

Spindle-like MOFs-derived porous carbon filled sulfonated poly (ether ether ketone): A high performance proton exchange membrane for direct methanol fuel cells

Honghao Huang et al.

Summary: The sulfonated spindle-like carbon derived from metal-organic framework has been used as a filler for the SPEEK membrane, resulting in improved properties as a proton exchange membrane for fuel cells. The MOF-C-SO3H@SPEEK membrane exhibits higher proton conductivity and lower methanol permeability compared to Nafion 115, leading to a maximum power density of 83.91 mW cm(-2) in direct methanol fuel cells.

SPEEK proton exchange membrane with enhanced proton conductivity stability from phosphotungstic acid-encapsulated silica nanorods

Xiaoyu Meng et al.

Summary: The rod-like silica modified by silane coupling agent to load phosphotungstic acid (HPW@K-r-SiO2) was used to create the outstanding SPEEK/HPW@K-r-SiO2-1.0 composite membrane. Compared with SPEEK/HPW, this composite membrane shows significant improvements in dimensional stability, proton conductivity, and conductivity stability under both low and high temperature conditions.

Enhancing Proton Conductivity of Sulfonated Poly(ether ether ketone)-Based Membranes by Incorporating Phosphotungstic-Acid-Coupled Graphene Oxide

Quan Peng et al.

Summary: The long-range proton transfer pathways constructed with HPW@mGO nanosheets integrated into polymers significantly enhance the proton conductivities of the nanohybrid membranes under various humidity conditions. The distinct proton conduction behavior of HPW and IMILs, along with the presence of long-range two-dimensional interfacial ionic pathways, contribute to this enhancement.

A review of proton exchange membranes based on protic ionic liquid/polymer blends for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells

Hosni Ahmed Elwan et al.

Summary: Protic ionic liquids are receiving increasing research attention due to their versatile properties, particularly as ideal electrolytes for proton exchange membrane fuel cells. Blending various polymers with protic ILs to form solid films for PEMFCs has been explored. Five conventional polymers combined with protic ILs are discussed in detail, along with other polymers used in PEMs based on protic ILs, to provide comprehensive coverage in this area of research.
