Linearized Boltzmann Collision Operator: I. Polyatomic Molecules Modeled by a Discrete Internal Energy Variable and Multicomponent Mixtures

Niclas Bernhoff

Summary: This study extends classical results for the linearized Boltzmann collision operator for monatomic single species to the case of polyatomic single species and multicomponent mixtures. The results show that the linearized Boltzmann collision operator is a nonnegative symmetric operator with a finite-dimensional kernel. The study also proves a compactness result for the operator, which can be decomposed into a positive multiplication operator and a compact operator.

A General Framework for the Kinetic Modelling of Polyatomic Gases

Thomas Borsoni et al.

Summary: We propose a general framework for the kinetic modelling of non-relativistic polyatomic gases, which allows for the characterization of each particle by its velocity and internal state. Various classical and semi-classical models can fit into this framework, and we prove the H-Theorem for the proposed kinetic equation. We also derive Euler equations as a zero-order approximation and demonstrate the application of the framework to the Hydrogen Fluoride gas.

Consistent, explicit, and accessible Boltzmann collision operator for polyatomic gases

Vladimir Djordjic et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a collision operator model for the evolution of the distribution function of a polyatomic gas, based on a polyatomic generalization of the variable hard-sphere model including frozen collisions. The model is consistent with the monatomic case and allows easy evaluations for moment equations and the Chapman-Enskog expansion.

POLYTROPIC GAS MODELLING AT KINETIC AND MACROSCOPIC LEVELS

Vladimir Djordjic et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the kinetic model of a polyatomic gas in different settings corresponding to different choices of functional space. The equivalence of these settings is shown after rescaling the distribution function and reformulating the cross section. The paper further establishes macroscopic models, calculates exact nonlinear production terms, and provides new expressions for relaxation times and transport coefficients in linearized settings.
