The effects of orientation control via tension-compression on microstructural evolution and mechanical behavior of AZ31 Mg alloy sheet

Qingshan Yang et al.

Summary: Controlling grain orientation through twinning activity is crucial for understanding the deformation mechanism of Mg alloy sheets. Precompression can generate {10-12} twin-texture components, providing an alternative way to improve the formability of Mg alloy sheets.

Dislocation facilitated formation and evolution of basal-prismatic/prismatic-basal interfaces in a Mg alloy

Huhu Su et al.

Summary: The formation and evolution of basal-prismatic/prismatic-basal (BP/PB) interfaces in a Mg alloy under cyclic deformation were studied and modeled based on atomic-resolution experimental observations and interfacial defects theory. It was found that BP/PB interfaces could be formed by emission of specific dislocations and twinning disconnections, and could transform into twin boundaries. The experimental results offer insights into the dislocation-assisted mechanisms of formation and evolution of BP/PB interfaces in hexagonal-close-packed materials.

A quantitative study on planar mechanical anisotropy of a Mg-2Zn-1Ca alloy

Xinde Huang et al.

Summary: A strong planar yield anisotropy was quantitatively studied in a Mg-2Zn-1 Ca alloy, showing that it exists regardless of grain size and is absent in a texture with circular distribution of basal poles. Basal slip and prismatic slip, as well as extension twinning, were identified as important mechanisms in the yield process. The parameters of Hall-Petch relation were used to analyze the anisotropy mechanism.

Texture development and dislocation activities in Mg-Nd and Mg-Ca alloy sheets

Summary: This study investigated the differences in texture development and active deformation mechanisms during sheet rolling for binary Mg-RE or Mg-Ca alloys compared to their ternary counterparts with Zn. The analyses were based on in-situ synchrotron experiments and electron backscatter diffraction measurements, revealing direct experimental evidence of texture development and active deformation mechanisms. Higher activations of nonbasal a c+a 1010 a a c+a a slip in the Zn-containing ternary alloys were confirmed through EBSD misorientation analysis.

Generalized Slip Operation Factor Considering Contribution of Secondary Slip Systems

Yoshiki Kawano et al.

Summary: This study extended the slip operation factor (SOF) to adapt to individual slip systems and considered the contribution of secondary slip systems, resulting in the development of the generalized SOF (SOFS) and the modified version (MSOF). Experimental results showed that SOFS provided similar results to slip strain distributions for individual slip systems when single slips were dominant and the deformation was slight, while MSOF predicted strain distributions with higher accuracy compared to SOF.

Multi-heterostructure and mechanical properties of N-doped FeMnCoCr high entropy alloy

Zhufeng He et al.

Summary: This study presents a novel strategy of heavy nitrogen-doping in a low-cost metastable FeMnCoCr HEA to produce ultrastrong, tough, and low-cost HEAs. By simple thermomechanical processing, a multiheterostructure was formed, leading to a significant increase in yield strength and uniform elongation of the material. The high-nitrogen duplex alloy design strategy developed here provides a new paradigm for developing high-performance fcc HEAs.

Development of novel lightweight and cost-effective Mg-Ce-Al wrought alloy with high strength

Hucheng Pan et al.

Summary: A new mechanism of linear/planar cosegregation of solutes has been discovered in Mg alloys, leading to ultrafine grains formation. The addition of tiny Al into Mg-Ce alloy promotes the formation of Ce-Al-enriched segregation along dislocations and grain boundaries, effectively counterbalancing thermally activated dislocation recovery and guaranteeing grain refinement. Ultra-fined grains are mainly related to both linear and planar cosegregation of solutes, rather than traditional planar segregations and/or nanoprecipitations at grain boundaries.

Summary: The effect of Ca and Zn in solid solution on the critical resolved shear stress (CRSS) of different slip systems in Mg alloys was investigated, revealing changes in plastic anisotropy and twin growth. The results showed that the addition of solute atoms increased the CRSS for basal slip and decreased the CRSS for pyramidal slip, leading to improved ductility and formability in the Mg-Ca-Zn alloys.

Summary: The high ductility of the Mg-2Gd-0.4Zr alloy at room temperature is attributed to the rare earth texture, higher proportion of non-basal slip, high grain boundary strength, and synergy between twinning and dislocation. Local strain compatibility may also contribute to its high ductility.
