Molten salt synthesis and formation mechanisms of ternary V-based MAX phases by V-Al alloy strategy

Yi Zhong et al.

Summary: A new facile approach using low-cost V-Al alloys and carbon black with molten salts assistance was able to obtain V2AlC and V4AlC3 in milder conditions. The method is shown to be thermodynamically superior to the traditional method, with X-ray diffraction and Scanning Electron Microscopy revealing phase and morphology evolutions. Unreported formation mechanisms were also revealed for the first time.

Realizing the air brazing of ZrO2 ceramics through Al metal

Yaotian Yan et al.

Summary: The exploration towards cost-effective filler metal for ceramics joining has always been the key issues for ceramics joining. In this study, we revealed that the spreading behavior of Al metal on ZrO2-based ceramic under air heating conditions is influenced by the geometric limit effects of the dense Al2O3 surface that forms in-situ. This finding inspired the successful joining of ZrO2-based ceramics in air using Al metal as the filler, through the diffusion of Al towards the ceramic side. The interfacial bonding effect between the Al2O3 layer, formed in-situ on the Al filler surface, and the ZrO2 ceramic is crucial for the formation of a fine interface with high shear strength, relieving lattice mismatch and stress at the ceramic-filler metal transition interface.

Regulating the interfacial reaction of Sc2W3O12/AgCuTi composite filler by introducing a carbon barrier layer

Pengcheng Wang et al.

Summary: This study proposes a novel strategy of incorporating a carbon barrier layer between the active filler and Sc2W3O12 materials, which effectively promotes the negative thermal expansion behavior of Sc2W3O12 and enhances the shear strength of brazed joints. The results provide insights for expanding the application of NTE materials in brazing processes and contribute to the development of low-CTE composites.

Modeling of growth rate and morphology mechanism of whisker and hillock on micro-bumps under temperature-pressure-humidity storage

Ke Lin et al.

Summary: A novel model was established to calculate the growth rate of whisker on fine-pitch Cu pillar micro-bumps and illustrate its morphology mechanism. The calculated theoretical steady-state average growth rate of whisker on micro-bumps was more accurate than previous models. The diversification of whisker morphology was dependent on various factors. These findings are significantly important for improving the reliability of advanced packaging.

Whisker Growth in Sn Coatings: A Review of Current Status and Future Prospects

Piyush Jagtap et al.

Summary: The article reviews the extensive studies on whisker growth out of Sn-plated surfaces, discussing the mechanisms of growth, the roles of stress and its regeneration, oxide layer, diffusion conduits, and crystal anisotropy in creating conditions conducive for whiskering. Recent proposals for effectively mitigating whisker growth in Sn coatings are also discussed, along with an outlook on important unresolved issues related to whisker growth.

Isotope study reveals atomic motion mechanism for the formation of metal whiskers in MAX phase

Chengjie Lu et al.

Summary: In this study, the extrusion of whiskers from MAX phases was investigated using a combination of experiment and simulation methods. It was found that the extruded whiskers are composed of atoms from both excess elements and lattice atoms, with the extrusion process accompanying the substitution of excess elements for lattice atoms. The driving force behind this process is believed to be the chemical potential gradient or reduced formation enthalpy.

Effect of Cultivation Conditions on Tin Whisker Growth on Ti2SnC

Yushuang Liu et al.

Summary: The research found that tin whisker growth propensity increases at higher temperatures or in an oxidizing atmosphere, and whisker nucleation can be accelerated at elevated temperatures. Furthermore, whiskers formed in argon gradually evolve into a faceted morphology driven by the reduction of surface energy. These findings provide valuable insights into tin whisker growth.

Revealing the strengthening and toughening mechanisms of Al-CuO composite fabricated via in-situ solid-state reaction

Xudong Rong et al.

Summary: A novel manufacturing method of Al-CuO composite was reported, showing high strength and fracture elongation. The toughening mechanism was rationalized based on the influence of Al2O3 on dislocation punched zone and plastic zone. The size and spatial distribution of Al2O3 significantly contributed to the high mechanical performance of the composite.
