Grain boundary evolution during low-strain grain boundary engineering achieved by strain-induced boundary migration in pure copper

Xinye Yang et al.

Summary: Grain boundary engineering (GBE) approaches involving small deformation and annealing have been widely used to improve grain boundary-related properties of polycrystalline materials. However, the mechanism of GBE is still unclear, and whether it is achieved through strain induced boundary migration (SIBM) or recrystallization is still under debate. In this study, strain and annealing treatments were applied to pure copper, and the results suggest that SIBM is more effective in optimizing the distribution of grain boundary characteristics compared to recrystallization. The evolution of grain boundary structure during SIBM was also investigated using a quasi in-situ heating electron backscatter diffraction method. The results showed that SIBM was activated consecutively in high residual stress regions and then spread into surrounding deformed areas, ultimately covering almost the entire material. A schematic model was proposed to understand the SIBM-controlled GBE process, providing insights for guiding the design of GBE routes and parameters.

Intergranular stress corrosion cracking in simulated BWR water of 316L stainless steels manufactured with different procedures

Tingguang Liu et al.

Summary: The study investigated the stress corrosion cracking (SCC) of 316 L stainless steels manufactured with different procedures in a simulated BWR environment, and discussed the effects of grain boundary network on SCC. It was found that twin boundaries show stronger resistance to SCC, and that grain size has a significant influence on SCC propagation. Theoretical calculations were also used to estimate the grain size effect on crack propagation.
