Synthesis and application of paraffin/silica phase change nanocapsules: Experimental and numerical approach

Soumen Mandal et al.

Summary: This study focuses on synthesizing silica encapsulated paraffin phase change materials (PCMs) and their applications in cement-based systems. The paraffin droplets are successfully encapsulated into nano-sized capsules through one-pot in-situ hydrolysis and subsequent polycondensation. The resulting nanoencapsulated PCMs (NEPCMs) have distinct core-shell structures and spherical geometry. The NEPCMs show high encapsulation ratio and efficiency, as well as excellent latent heats of melting and solidification. The findings demonstrate that the addition of NEPCMs to cement can reduce the temperature rise during the heat of hydration, making them reliable high thermal energy storage materials for concrete and building materials.
