Shielding effects on fatigue and crack growth of the recasting zone induced by laser manufacturing in a nickel-based superalloy

Tinglian Zhang et al.

Summary: The present study investigated the fatigue properties and crack growth of laser recasting materials using experimental and computational methods. The shielding effect observed is attributed to strength mismatch, leading to cyclic softening and mean stress relaxation in the under-matched recasting material. The recasting material exhibits higher crack nucleation resistance and lower crack growth rate compared to the base material, indicating that the weak recasting zone does not significantly impact the overall mechanical performance of the structure.

Effects of heat treatments on microstructure and mechanical properties of laser melting multi-layer materials

Tinglian Zhang et al.

Summary: The effects of different heat treatments on the microstructure and mechanical properties of laser melting nickel-based superalloys were systematically investigated in this study. The strength improvement of the heat-treated material was mainly derived from aging treatment and direct aging treatment, and it is recommended to use direct aging treatment for strengthening laser melting materials.

A process modeling approach for micro drilling of aerospace alloys with a waterjet guided laser system

Levent Subasi et al.

Summary: Laser drilling is an effective method for creating cooling holes on gas turbine parts. Waterjet guided laser (WJGL) is a hybrid process that offers improved machining results by coupling a laser beam with a thin cylindrical waterjet. It has potential for micro drilling operations on aerospace jet engine parts. However, further research is needed to understand the effects of process variables on material removal rate.

Additive manufacturing of functionally graded inconel 718: Effect of heat treatment and building orientation on microstructure and fatigue behaviour

Saeede Ghorbanpour et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the effect of post-process heat treatments on the microstructure and fatigue crack growth behavior of functionally graded (FG) laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) Inconel 718 (IN718) superalloy. The study shows that heat treatments can enhance the damage tolerance of L-PBF IN718 to the level of wrought material. Additionally, the effect of roughness-induced crack closure is found to be dependent on the build orientation.

Experimental study of nickel-based superalloy IN792 with femtosecond laser drilling method

Fengyun Zhang et al.

Summary: The study investigates a two-step approach for femtosecond laser drilling of nickel-based superalloys, proposing corresponding drilling optimization strategies based on different processing path parameters. Experimental results demonstrate the significant improvement in hole quality achieved with the two-step method compared to the one-step method.

Experimental and analytical investigation on service life of film cooling structure for single crystal turbine blade

Zixu Guo et al.

Summary: This study conducted life tests and analysis on the film cooling structure of single crystal turbine blade to predict service lives and understand damage mechanisms. The strain distribution was measured using digital image correlation, and a model based on the theory of critical distance was improved for life prediction. The crack nucleation mechanism was discussed, finding that microcracks around hole edges were induced by persistent slip bands. Microscopic observation revealed the uneven spatial distributions of matrix channel width and dislocation density, which can be used for life prediction and fault diagnosis of film cooling structures under service conditions.

Evaluation of different drilling quality and fatigue life prediction of nickel-based superalloy using equivalent initial flaw size

Fei Li et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the initial quality and fatigue life of nickel-based superalloys under different drilling processes, proposing a new expression for fatigue crack growth rate and predicting total fatigue life within 2 times error band. The validity of fatigue models and tests is confirmed through the combination of Equivalent Initial Flaw Size (EIFS) and fatigue crack growth rate.

Microstructural characterization and fatigue performance of the recast material induced by laser manufacturing of a nickel-based superalloy

Tinglian Zhang et al.

Summary: The research systematically investigated the microstructures and mechanical properties of laser-induced recast material on nickel-based superalloy Inconel 718, finding that the yield strength and microhardness in the recast zone are lower than that of the base material due to epitaxial growth of columnar grains and a decrease in strengthening phases gamma' and gamma''. On the other hand, the recast-affected zone shows higher yield strength attributed to the growth of strengthening twins, partial dissolution of the delta phase, and cold work hardening.
