Quantitative Effects of Mixture Parameters on Alkali-Activated Binder-Based Ultra-High Strength Concrete at Ambient and Elevated Temperatures

Jin-Cheng Liu et al.

Summary: This work investigates the effects of mixture parameters on the fresh and hardened properties of a new type of alkali-activated binder-based ultra-high strength concrete (AAB-UHSC) before and after exposure to high temperatures. The results show that the activator/precursor ratio is the decisive parameter controlling the slump flow diameter of fresh AAB-UHSC, while all four parameters have considerable influence on the compressive strength of AAB-UHSC at room temperature. Increasing the activator/precursor ratio improves the compressive strength at room temperature, but has adverse effects on the residual strength after exposure to high temperatures. Based on the test results and analysis, a new mixture proportioning method for AAB-UHSC is proposed and validated.

Continuous Monitoring of the Early-Age Properties of Activated GGBFS with Alkaline Solutions of Different Concentrations

Aziz Hasan Mahmood et al.

Summary: This study found that GGBFS is highly sensitive to the compositions of alkaline solutions, with higher alkalinity leading to better dissolution of species, increased heat evolution, and shorter setting time. The activator concentration also affects the rate of product formations and morphological features, with higher Ms values resulting in homogeneous slag morphology.

Recent advances in chemical admixtures for improving the workability of alkali-activated slag-based material systems

Su Tong et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the progress in using chemical admixtures to improve the workability and setting time of alkali-activated slag (AAS) systems. The stability of different superplasticizers in various alkaline activator solutions and their influence on dispersion performance in AAS systems are summarized. Additionally, the effects of different superplasticizers and retarders on the workability, setting time, and mechanical properties of AAS systems are discussed.

Sequestration and release of nitrite and nitrate in alkali-activated slag: A route toward smart corrosion control

Zhijian Chen et al.

Summary: This study explores the potential of autogenously generating nitrite- and nitrate-intercalated hydrotalcite in alkali-activated slag to improve corrosion protection of steel in reinforced concrete. The results show that the added nitrite and nitrate ions are preferably uptaken in the interlayer structure of hydrotalcite in AAS, with little detrimental effects on chloride binding capacity but slight enhancement on chloride ingress.

Clinkerless ultra-high strength concrete based on alkali-activated slag at high temperatures

Rongjin Cai et al.

Summary: The study investigates the degradation mechanisms of clinkerless alkali-activated slag based ultra-high strength concrete (AAS-UHSC) exposed to high temperatures up to 800 degrees C. It demonstrates the beneficial roles of potassium incorporation in improving the thermal stability and integrity of AAS-UHSC. Unlike Portland cement clinker-based UHSC, AAS-UHSC shows no sign of explosive spalling, likely due to the presence of microcracks enhancing pore network connectivity.

Effect of Dolomite Filler on the Sulfuric Acid Resistance of Alkali-Activated Slag Binders

Hailong Ye et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of dolomite filler in combination with pulverized fly ash on the sulfuric acid resistance of alkali-activated slag (AAS). The results show that the incorporation of dolomite and fly ash exacerbates alkali leaching and alkalinity loss in AAS, leading to increased strength loss in sulfuric acid solutions due to a coarsened pore structure. Additionally, dolomite incorporation reduces the formation of gypsum and glauberite in AAS at low and intermediate acid concentrations, but in strong acid media, dolomite dissolution contributes to the formation of deleterious sulfate minerals.
