Out of phase Quaternary uplift-rate changes reveal normal fault interaction, implied by deformed marine palaeoshorelines

M. Meschis et al.

Summary: By studying the palaeoshorelines in the Messina Strait, southern Italy, we can gain information about the timing and spatial distribution of uplifted normal faults. The results show that the uplift rates of the faults changed over time and this could be attributed to the interactions between the faults. This has implications for long-term seismic hazard assessment in active normal fault systems.

Elusive active faults in a low strain rate region (Sicily, Italy): Hints from a multidisciplinary land-to-sea approach

Nicolo Parrino et al.

Summary: Low Strain Rate regions (LSRrs), which undergo tectonic deformation at rates of 1 mm/yr or less, are often considered low seismic hazard areas. However, infrequent but high-magnitude earthquakes suggest that identifying active structures in these regions is a challenge. This study proposes a multidisciplinary approach to detect active geological structures in the partially offshore northern Sicilian LSRr. The main results include evidence of active tectonic deformation, 3D modeling of active faults, slip rate determination, GNSS velocity field record, and morphotectonic mapping.

Geo-hazards of the San Vito peninsula offshore (southwestern Tyrrhenian Sea)

A. Sulli et al.

Summary: This paper presents geomorphological hazard mapping of the San Vito Peninsula offshore, highlighting potential sites of geomorphological hazards such as canyons, small incisions, and landslides. The features that can generate submarine hazard include unstable sediment packages, submarine canyons with regressive erosion, and coastal landslides.

The meeting place of backarc and foreland rifting: The example of the offshore western Sicily (Central Mediterranean)

Alfonsa Milia et al.

Summary: The simultaneous rifting processes affecting both backarc, thrust belt, and foreland occurred in the offshore western Sicily. Two zones characterized by basins with different directions of extension have been recognized in the study area, one trending NE-SW and located south of the Egadi Islands, and another trending E-W and positioned north of the Egadi Islands. These findings provide insights into the geodynamic evolution of the African and Eurasian plates in the Central Mediterranean.

Late Quaternary coastal uplift of southwestern Sicily, central Mediterranean sea

Luigi Ferranti et al.

Summary: Mapping and luminescence aging of raised marine terraces and aeolian ridges along a 90 km coastal stretch in southwestern Sicily provide the first quantitative assessment of vertical tectonic deformation in this region. The results demonstrate that the uplift includes a regional component related to the involvement of thicker crustal portions of the northern African continental margin in the thrust belt, and a local component corresponding to actively growing bedrock folds.

Active north-vergent thrusting in the northern Sicily continental margin in the frame of the quaternary evolution of the Sicilian collisional system

Attilio Sulli et al.

Summary: The Sicilian Fold and Thrust Belt has undergone two thin-skinned shortening events and one thick-skinned thrusting event, with recent tectonic processes in the northern Sicily continental margin indicating a shift in deformation distribution and orientation during the Africa-Europe convergence. These findings align with interpretations suggesting a change in subduction polarity in the central Mediterranean, potentially impacting seismic risk assessment and understanding of active structures in marine areas.

Refining the middle-late Pleistocene chronology of marine terraces and uplift history in a sector of the Apulian foreland (southern Italy) by applying a synchronous correlation technique and amino acid racemization to Patella spp. and Thetystrombus latus

Vincenzo de Santis et al.

Summary: This study applied synchronous correlation technique and amino acid racemization (AAR) analyses to refine the knowledge about terrace phases and uplift history in the middle-late Pleistocene in a sector of the Apulian foreland. The results show that the number of preserved paleoshorelines is controlled by uplift rates, with fewer paleoshorelines preserved in regions with lower uplift rates.
