Metal matrix nanocomposites in tribology: Manufacturing, performance, and mechanisms

Shuaihang Pan et al.

Summary: This review systematically summarizes the fabrication and processing techniques of metal matrix nanocomposites (MMNCs) in tribology, investigates the important factors determining their tribological performance, and provides a (semi-)quantitative description of the mechanisms behind improved anti-friction and anti-wear performance. It also discusses the potential applications of MMNCs in various fields and explores the potential development of modeling, experimental, and theoretical techniques in MMNCs' tribological processes.

Selective laser melting of novel 7075 aluminum powders with internally dispersed TiC nanoparticles

Tianqi Zheng et al.

Summary: 7075 aluminum alloy is widely used in the aerospace and defense industries due to its superior mechanical performance. However, it is challenging to manufacture high-strength AA7075 using selective laser melting (SLM) due to issues such as hot cracking and elemental vaporization. In this study, specially designed AA7075 powders containing TiC nanoparticles were successfully printed using SLM, resulting in dense parts with homogeneous microstructures and improved mechanical properties.

Wire-arc additive manufacturing of a novel high-performance Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy: Processing, characterization and feasibility demonstration

Thomas Klein et al.

Summary: Wire-arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) is a viable technology for producing metallic components of medium complexity at a high deposition rate. A novel alloy system based on the Al-Zn-Mg-Cu system has been successfully developed for WAAM, exhibiting optimal mechanical properties and a pronounced age-hardening response. The alloy, with an isotropic proof stress of up to around 340 MPa and a fracture strain of up to around 11%, has been demonstrated to be suitable for advanced applications, as shown through the fabrication of a motorcycle piston.

Nanoparticles Enabled Mechanism for Hot Cracking Elimination in Aluminum Alloys

Maximilian Sokoluk et al.

Summary: By incorporating TiC and TiB2 nanoparticles into hot crack susceptible aluminum alloys 7075, 6061, and 2024, it was found that the principal mechanism of hot cracking elimination is attributed to the unusual modification of both grains and intermetallic phases, as well as a higher liquid fraction at the final stage of solidification.
