Mesenchymal stem cells: a new front emerges in coronavirus disease 2019 treatment

Syed Shadab Raza et al.

Summary: Currently, there is no effective pharmacotherapy for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in COVID-19 patients. Severe pneumonia can lead to organ damage, edema, and increased mortality due to excessive pro-inflammatory cytokine production. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), with their immunoregulatory and differentiation potential, have shown promise in the clinical treatment of COVID-19 patients, but long-term effects need to be further studied.

Magnetic particle imaging: tracer development and the biomedical applications of a radiation-free, sensitive, and quantitative imaging modality

Stanley Harvell-Smith et al.

Summary: Magnetic particle imaging (MPI) is a novel tracer-based imaging technique that allows real-time three-dimensional imaging with high sensitivity, no radiation, and absolute quantification; with features such as high contrast and zero signal attenuation at depth, MPI can image any part of the body, enabling a wide range of biomedical applications.

Application of Wharton jelly-derived mesenchymal stem cells in patients with pulmonary fibrosis

Mahshid Saleh et al.

Summary: Pulmonary fibrosis is a devastating disease with no effective treatment options. Basic research using stem cells, specifically Wharton jelly-derived mesenchymal stem cells, shows promise in finding alternative therapies. However, further clinical trials are needed to determine their safety and efficacy.

Inhalation of MSC-EVs is a noninvasive strategy for ameliorating acute lung injury

Ruijing Zhao et al.

Summary: This study compared the efficacy of administering mesenchymal stem cell-derived small extracellular vesicles (MSC-EVs) via inhalation and tail vein injection for treating acute lung injury (ALI). The results showed that inhalation of MSC-EVs was more effective in reducing pro-inflammatory cytokine expression, increasing anti-inflammatory cytokine expression, and decreasing pathological scores in ALI. Additionally, MSC-EV administration promoted the polarization of macrophages towards a M2 phenotype. The study also revealed the involvement of immune and redox mediators, including TLR4, Arg1, and HO-1, in the therapeutic effects of MSC-EVs.

Thermo- and Light-Responsive Polymer-Coated Magnetic Nanoparticles as Potential Drug Carriers

Guihua Cui et al.

Summary: A series of thermo- and light-responsive copolymers were synthesized and successfully modified on the surface of iron oxide nanoparticles. The resulting nanoparticles exhibited excellent thermo-sensitivity and photo-sensitivity, and showed no significant cytotoxicity in cell viability assays, indicating potential for drug delivery in tumor microenvironment.

Mesenchymal stromal cells as carriers of IL-12 reduce primary and metastatic tumors of murine melanoma

Natalia Kulach et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that MSC are effective carriers of IL-12 cytokine, showing anti-tumor effects in primary and metastatic melanoma models. The use of MSC as carriers allowed for intravenous administration of IL-12 without toxic side effects, resulting in reduced tumor growth and metastases, decreased vascular density, and increased immune response in treated mice. Therapeutic properties of IL-12 cytokine were successfully exerted by modified MSC without inducing toxicity.
