They Told Me This Isn't a Hotel: Young People's Experiences and Perceptions of Care When Presenting to the Emergency Department with Suicide-Related Behaviour

Summary: The number of young people presenting to Australian emergency departments with mental health concerns, particularly suicidal behaviour, is increasing. However, there is little understanding about the experiences of these young people. In this qualitative study, focus groups were conducted with 55 young people aged 16-25 to develop a framework for youth suicide prevention in Western Australia. Results indicated that participants had negative experiences related to the emergency department environment and staff attitudes. Adapting emergency department practices and approaches based on these findings may lead to lower rates of repeated presentations, admissions to hospital, suicide attempts, and deaths by suicide.

Suicide and mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic in Japan

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has had a varied impact on suicide deaths, with initial numbers lower than average but increasing over time. Young women, particularly those under 40, have experienced a significant increase in suicide deaths, indicating a decline in mental health and adverse economic conditions. Continuous monitoring and appropriate suicide prevention efforts are crucial during this time, especially for the most vulnerable populations identified in the study.

Suicide decline and improved psychiatric treatment status: longitudinal survey of suicides and serious suicide attempters in Tokyo

Summary: Connecting individuals in need of psychiatric treatment with adequate medical services has been a major strategy for suicide prevention in Japan. By examining the changes in psychiatric treatment status of high-risk suicidal individuals, this study found that improvements in treatment among male adults may have contributed to the reduction in suicides, but the low treatment rate among the elderly remains a pressing issue.

Mental health and well-being during the COVID-19 pandemic: longitudinal analyses of adults in the UK COVID-19 Mental Health & Wellbeing study

Summary: The study found that suicidal ideation increased, while symptoms of anxiety and levels of defeat and entrapment decreased during the early stages of lockdown in the UK. Levels of depressive symptoms remained stable, positive well-being increased, and levels of loneliness did not significantly change. Women, young people, those from more socially disadvantaged backgrounds, and individuals with pre-existing mental health problems experienced worse mental health outcomes during the pandemic.
