The value of cystatin C in predicting perioperative and long-term prognosis of renal transplantation

Summary: This study evaluated the value of cystatin C in predicting the perioperative and long-term prognosis of renal transplantation. The results showed that cystatin C is a sensitive indicator of renal function during the perioperative period and can predict the occurrence of delayed graft function. Patients diagnosed with shrunken pore syndrome had a poor long-term prognosis.

Cystatin C-based equations for estimating glomerular filtration rate do not require race or sex coefficients

Summary: Estimation or measurement of glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is important for patient treatment. Plasma creatinine has been used for GFR estimation since 1926, but it requires race coefficients for improved accuracy. In contrast, cystatin C-based GFR-estimating equations do not require race coefficients and are recommended for reliable estimation. Sex terms may also be controversial, but are not necessary when using cystatin C-based equations for GFR estimation.

Using cystatin C for GFR estimation in critically ill patients can improve long-term risk prediction for cardiovascular death.

Estimation of Muscle Mass Using Creatinine/Cystatin C Ratio in Japanese Community-Dwelling Older People

Summary: This study developed a prediction equation to estimate skeletal muscle mass based on the creatinine/cystatin C ratio. The equation showed strong correlations between the predicted muscle mass and bioimpedance analysis-measured muscle mass. The equation also had high accuracy in identifying low muscle mass. This new prediction equation could be a useful tool for diagnosing sarcopenia.
