A perspective on elastic metastructures for energy harvesting

Zhihui Wen et al.

Summary: Rapid advances have been made in the properties of metastructures, including phononic crystals, metamaterials, and metasurfaces, with regards to their robustness, high power density, and broadband behavior. These advancements provide unique advantages for energy harvesting devices in meeting technological upgrades in various applied science and engineering applications. This article systematically provides an overview of the mechanisms underlying these properties, considering different wave localization configurations in elastic metastructures for energy harvesting purposes, and discusses future prospects for energy harvesting metastructures.

Topological surface wave metamaterials for robust vibration attenuation and energy harvesting

Xinyue Wu et al.

Summary: The study proposes topological metamaterials in the Hertz frequency range, consisting of concrete pillars in a honeycomb lattice on the soil ground. By breaking the inversion symmetry of the unit cell, a non-trivial bandgap is formed, analogous to the quantum valley Hall effect. The robustness of the topological interface between two different crystal phases against defects and disorders is quantitatively analyzed. Additionally, a harvesting energy device is designed using the robust and compact topological edge state, showing functionality in both reducing surface vibration and energy harvesting.

Closed-form solutions for attenuation peaks and band boundaries of general monocoupled systems

Abhigna Bhatt et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a general theory for obtaining the attenuation characteristics of a monocoupled system from the roots and poles of the dispersion relation. The closed-form expressions for the peaks in attenuation level and bounds are derived for the monocoupled system and its seven subsystems. The results are helpful for understanding the attenuation behavior of monocoupled systems.

Broadband wave attenuation and topological transport in novel periodic pile barriers

Anchen Ni et al.

Summary: This study introduces the concept of topological insulator (TI) into the design of periodic pile barriers, aiming to achieve simultaneous vibration mitigation and waveguiding. The existence of topological edge states between unit cells with different topological phases is confirmed through complex dispersion analysis, and the broadband wave attenuation and topological wave transport of the barriers are validated in both frequency and time domains.

Emergence of non-reciprocity in metabeam exploiting piezoelectric sensing and actuation

Arnab Banerjee et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a unique strategy utilizing the concept of feedback control to drive a piezoelectric bimorph through the voltage feedback from another sensing bimorph, resulting in non-reciprocal behavior. The dispersion diagram of the system is analyzed using the transfer matrix method, exploring the development of attenuation band gap and mode shape characteristics for varying gain. It is observed that the system can achieve uninterrupted attenuation band gap even with reasonably lower feedback gain.
