Differential Effects of Transition Metals on Growth and Metal Uptake for Two Distinct Lactobacillus Species

Uyen Huynh et al.

Summary: Lactobacillus is a beneficial genus of bacteria found in the gut microbiota, but their molecular functions, especially those related to metal metabolism, are not well-defined. In this study, the researchers investigated how Lactobacillus species respond to different transition metals, such as zinc, manganese, and iron, by quantifying their metal contents and studying their growth kinetics. The results showed that the two Lactobacillus species studied took up more manganese, zinc, and iron compared with other transition metals measured. Different metal-dependent patterns were observed in their growth kinetics, suggesting that the effects of metals on Lactobacillus species depend significantly on the culture medium and growth conditions. These findings contribute to our understanding of how metals affect individual Lactobacillus species and have implications for the development of novel therapeutics and medical treatments.

Regulatory effects of transition metals supplementation/deficiency on the gut microbiota

Cheng-Yu Li et al.

Summary: Transition metal ions play a regulatory role in the gut microbiota, with this paper providing a comprehensive discussion on the effects of four types of transition metal ions (iron, copper, zinc, and manganese) on gut microbiota based on 20 animal model and human studies. Both deficiency and supplementation of these transition metal ions on the gut microbiota were considered, along with potential mechanisms governing their regulatory effects.

Gut Microbiota as a Mediator of Essential and Toxic Effects of Zinc in the Intestines and Other Tissues

Summary: The present study reviewed the association between Zn status and gut microbiota characteristics, as well as the potential role of Zn-induced microbiota in modulating systemic effects. The data showed a close relationship between Zn metabolism and gut microbiota, with Zn being a significant factor for gut bacteria biodiversity. Physiological and nutritional Zn doses improved gut wall integrity, while Zn overexposure induced substantial alterations in gut microbiota.

Zinc hydroxychloride supplementation improves tibia bone development and intestinal health of broiler chickens

H. T. T. Nguyen et al.

Summary: This study found that dietary zinc levels significantly affect tibia strength and zinc concentration, while 80 and 100 mg/kg of zinc hydroxychloride have positive effects on the expression of claudin-1 and tight junction protein-1. Higher levels of zinc in the diet can alter cecal microbiota towards Lactobacillus and decrease total bacterial load. Supplemental zinc in the feed has the potential to manipulate jejunal gut integrity at a molecular level.

Summary: Trace metals like iron, manganese, copper, and zinc are essential for development, growth, and metabolism, with deficiencies or toxicities impacting health. The interaction between gut microbiota and trace metals plays a crucial role in host health, offering potential insights for therapeutic strategies.
