Clinical Predictors of Liver Fibrosis Presence and Progression in Human Immunodeficiency Virus-Associated Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease

Lindsay T. Fourman et al.

Summary: This study observed high rates of hepatic fibrosis and progression in patients with HIV-associated NAFLD. Visceral adiposity was identified as a novel predictor of worsening fibrosis. Baseline histologic characteristics did not relate to fibrosis progression.

Osteopontin Takes Center Stage in Chronic Liver Disease

Zhuolun Song et al.

Summary: Despite being initially discovered in bone, osteopontin (OPN) is expressed in other tissues as well. In addition to its well-established physiological roles, research suggests that OPN is also involved in chronic liver disease.

Splenectomy improves liver fibrosis via tumor necrosis factor superfamily 14 (LIGHT) through the JNK/TGF-β1 signaling pathway

Qing-shan Liang et al.

Summary: Splenectomy reduces liver fibrosis by decreasing the expression of LIGHT, a factor that fuels fibrosis, thereby improving liver disease.

Growth Hormone Releasing Hormone Reduces Circulating Markers of Immune Activation in Parallel with Effects on Hepatic Immune Pathways in Individuals with HIV-infection and Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease

Takara L. Stanley et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that long-term treatment with a GHRH analog reduced markers of T-cell and monocyte/macrophage activity, suggesting that augmentation of the GH axis may ameliorate immune activation in an HIV population with metabolic dysregulation, systemic and end organ inflammation.

Delineating tesamorelin response pathways in HIV-associated NAFLD using a targeted proteomic and transcriptomic approach

Lindsay T. Fourman et al.

Summary: Tesamorelin reduces liver fat and prevents fibrosis progression in HIV-associated NAFLD by suppressing key angiogenic, fibrogenic, and pro-inflammatory mediators. Plasma levels of VEGFA, TGFB1, and CSF1 are significantly decreased with Tesamorelin treatment, and reductions in VEGFA and CSF1 are associated with improvements in NAFLD activity score.
