Influence of layered heterogeneity on nitrate enrichment induced by cut-off walls in coastal aquifers

Shaobo Gao et al.

Summary: Cut-off walls have been shown to effectively mitigate seawater intrusion, but may lead to nitrate contamination in coastal aquifers. This study used numerical models to investigate the impact of stratified geological heterogeneities on nitrate accumulation induced by cut-off walls. The results suggest that aquifer heterogeneities play a primary role in regulating nitrate pollution, and the location and depth of the cut-off wall also influence nitrate enrichment.

Crab bioturbation drives coupled iron-phosphate-sulfide cycling in mangrove and salt marsh soils

Kai Xiao et al.

Summary: In this study, the impact of crab bioturbation on the redox geochemistry of iron, phosphate, and sulfide in coastal wetlands was investigated. The results showed that crab burrowing activities created deep depths for redox reactions and facilitated the coupling of Fe and S, leading to spatial variability in soil geochemistry. These findings highlight the importance of crab burrows in mediating the cycling of key elements in wetland ecosystems.

Effects of fiddler crab bioturbation on the geochemical migration and bioavailability of heavy metals in coastal wetlands

Feng Pan et al.

Summary: Fiddler crabs, as ecosystem engineers, can alter biogeochemistry in coastal wetlands. This study found that their burrowing activity increases the concentration of heavy metals in sediment and enhances the retention of dissolved heavy metals. The hydrological conditions in different coastal wetlands regulate the effects of bioturbation on heavy metal behavior. Therefore, the importance of bioturbation in heavy metal migration and bioavailability needs to be reconsidered.

Nitrate transport behavior behind subsurface dams under varying hydrological conditions

Yunhai Fang et al.

Summary: This study examined the combined effect of tides and subsurface dams on nitrate pollution in upstream groundwater through laboratory experiments and numerical simulations. The results showed that both tides and subsurface dams increased nitrate contamination, with tides having a more significant impact. Interestingly, the joint action of tides and subsurface dams led to a greater increase in nitrate pollution than their individual effects.

Experimental and numerical evidence on the influence of tidal activity on the effectiveness of subsurface dams

Yunhai Fang et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively assessed the effectiveness of subsurface dams for controlling seawater intrusion and upstream groundwater pollution, taking into consideration sea boundary conditions including static and tidal scenarios. The results revealed that the effective and increased discharge height range (E&IDHR) of subsurface dams depended on dam location, and tidal fluctuations significantly impacted this range. By acknowledging the E&IDHR, numerical and parametric uncertainties can be taken into account in designing subsurface dams to achieve optimal effectiveness in preventing seawater intrusion and upstream groundwater pollution.

Submarine groundwater discharge impacts on coastal nutrient biogeochemistry

Isaac R. Santos et al.

Summary: Submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) plays a significant role in connecting terrestrial and marine systems by releasing nutrients into coastal waters. SGD-derived nitrogen inputs can alleviate nitrogen limitation in coastal ecosystems. Saline SGD is a widespread source of recycled nutrients to global coastal waters, while fresh SGD acts as a localized point source of new nutrients.
