An ADTS Toolbox for Automatically Interpreting Active Distributed Temperature Sensing Measurements

Nataline Simon et al.

Summary: Active distributed temperature sensing (ADTS) experiments are useful for estimating thermal conductivities of the subsurface and groundwater flows. However, data interpretation can be challenging due to the large amount of data and lack of automated analysis tools. To address this, we developed the ADTS Toolbox, which contains MATLAB codes for automated interpretation and calculation of ADTS measurements.

A regional study of in-situ thermal conductivity of soil based on artificial neural network model

Jierui Dong et al.

Summary: This study develops an artificial neural network (ANN) model to accurately predict the in-situ thermal conductivity of soil. By using a set of explanatory variables including stratigraphic type, weighted thermal conductivity of bedrock, aquifer thickness, permeability coefficient, and groundwater depth, the model is able to achieve accurate predictions in similar regions and demonstrates good generalization ability.

Analysis of thermal dilution experiments with distributed temperature sensing for fractured rock characterization

Maria Klepikova et al.

Summary: Thermal dilution experiments using Fiber-Optic Distributed Temperature Sensing (FO-DTS) provide valuable information on groundwater flow and thermal properties in low-permeable fractured crystalline rock. The experiments offer improvements in estimating formation thermal conductivity and detecting hydraulically active fractures. These properties can be estimated from well-parametrized experiments, as they have a distinguished impact on temperature anomalies.

Numerical and Experimental Validation of the Applicability of Active-DTS Experiments to Estimate Thermal Conductivity and Groundwater Flux in Porous Media

N. Simon et al.

Summary: This study introduces two interpretation methods of active-DTS experiments for estimating thermal conductivities and groundwater fluxes in sediments. These methods rely on temperature measurements along a heated fiber-optic cable and consider heat transfer processes through the cable and porous media. The experimental validation demonstrates high accuracy of groundwater flux estimates and the complementary nature of both methods, making active-DTS experiments promising for various subsurface applications.

An inverse approach integrating flowmeter and pumping test data for three-dimensional aquifer characterization

Mohammed Aliouache et al.

Summary: The combination of tomographic pumping and flowmeter tests in an inverse approach allows for efficient characterization of three-dimensional aquifer properties, enhancing the realism of depositional features. This method offers a low-cost and rapid assessment of hydraulic properties in layered porous rocks, with good agreement between inverted hydraulic conductivity field and permeability measurements.

Heat Dissipation Test With Fiber-Optic Distributed Temperature Sensing to Estimate Groundwater Flux

Laura del Val et al.

Summary: A new analytical method involving heating the armor of a single fiber-optic cable is used to measure groundwater flux and thermal parameters, showing four identifiable temperature build-up periods. This method has higher spatial and temporal resolution compared to traditional thermal response tests, and is able to measure advective dissipation over a longer duration.

Influence of an anticline structure on hydrogeological functioning and aquifer interactions in a multilayered aquifer system: the case of Villagrains-Landiras anticline (Gironde, France)

C. Labat et al.

Summary: Geological deformations like anticlines play a significant role in aquifer system functioning. A multidisciplinary approach is proposed to characterize and quantify the impact of these features. Research in southwestern France has led to a better understanding of the complex architecture of aquifers and their interconnections with confining units.
