Particulate organic carbon exports from the terrestrial biosphere controlled by erosion

Xuling Luo et al.

Summary: This study reanalyzed and generated POC flux data of major rivers worldwide using updated databases and models. The results show that Asia exports the most POC, with the Amazon basin being a major contributor to the Atlantic POC. Additionally, there are two key zones of POC flux in the latitude belt.

A New Indicator for Global Food Security Assessment: Harvested Area Rather Than Cropland Area

Song Fengjiao et al.

Summary: Cropland area is not the sole factor affecting grain yield, as global grain yield is more closely related to harvested area rather than cropland area. Therefore, harvested area may be a more accurate indicator for ensuring food security.

Contributions of climate, elevated atmospheric CO2 concentration and land surface changes to variation in water use efficiency in Northwest China

Linshan Yang et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the temporal and spatial variation of ecosystem water use efficiency (WUE) in northwest China between 1982 and 2015. The results showed that gross primary productivity (GPP) and precipitation were the major driving factors for WUE variation, with water-related factors being more sensitive than energy-related factors. These findings have important implications for agricultural irrigation, water resources management, and ecological restoration in northwest China.

China's carbon budget inventory from 1997 to 2017 and its challenges to achieving carbon neutral strategies

Sirui Zhang et al.

Summary: This study analyzes China's carbon neutral capacity (CNC) and potential using various models and methods, and predicts future developments. The findings reveal that China's carbon emissions have not been fully absorbed in the past two decades, with carbon surplus mainly concentrated in relatively economically backward regions. Furthermore, the future predictions indicate that achieving carbon neutrality in China will be difficult without corresponding policy interventions.

High-Resolution Data Sets for Global Carbonate and Silicate Rock Weathering Carbon Sinks and Their Change Trends

Lian Xiong et al.

Summary: The Carbonate rock weathering Carbon Sink (CCS) and Silicate rock weathering Carbon Sink (SCS) are important in the carbon cycle and global climate change. This study quantifies the spatial-temporal patterns and trends of CCS and SCS from 1950 to 2099, finding that SCS covers a larger area than CCS but CCS has higher flux and overall carbon sink. It also shows an overall increase in CCS and SCS, with warming and humidity affecting CCS in the Northern Hemisphere and decreased runoff impacting SCS in the Southern Hemisphere.

Response of the weathering carbon sink in terrestrial rocks to climate variables and ecological restoration in China

Suhua Gong et al.

Summary: This study estimated the carbon sink of 12 types of terrestrial rocks in China and quantitatively evaluated the relative contribution rates of climate change and ecological restoration using the GEM-CO2 model and the Lindeman-Merenda-Gold model. The results showed that different types of rocks had significant differences in carbon sink, and water budget and precipitation were important factors affecting carbon sink.

Effects and implications of ecological restoration projects on ecosystem water use efficiency in the karst region of Southwest China

Zhi Ding et al.

Summary: The study found that in the karst region of Southwest China, the ecosystem water use efficiency (WUE) is lower but increases faster than in the non-karst region. The positive impact of ecological restoration projects, such as afforestation, on WUE is significant in the karst ecosystem, effectively improving its function.

Divergent forcing of water use efficiency from aridity in two meadows of the Mongolian Plateau

Gang Dong et al.

Summary: The study uses data from two representative temperate meadows on the Mongolian Plateau to investigate the impact of temporal aridity changes on WUE. Results show that the response of WUE to aridity varies between meadows due to differing GEP and ET responses to EF. The study also highlights the influence of growing season precipitation on WUE.

Summary: This study calculated the magnitude and distribution of the global silicate rock weathering carbon sink using high-precision data and predicted future trends. Brazil is the largest contributor to the global silicate rock weathering carbon sink, and future temperature changes will continue to impact carbon sink capacity.

Quantifying the contributions of human activities and climate change to vegetation net primary productivity dynamics in China from 2001 to 2016

Wenyan Ge et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the relative contributions of climate change and human activities to net primary productivity (NPP) in China using a two-step methodology based on RESTREND. Results showed a significant increase in NPP during the study period, with both climate change and human activities playing favorable roles in vegetation growth. Climate factors contributed 60.06% to vegetation changes, while human activities contributed 39.94% to NPP. Precipitation, temperature, solar radiation, and other climatic factors all had varying impacts on vegetation growth in different regions of China.
