A tree ring-based hydroclimate reconstruction for eastern Europe reveals large-scale teleconnection patterns

Catalin-Constantin Roibu et al.

Summary: The study presents a new beech tree-ring width composite chronology from eastern Romania, reflecting hydroclimate variability and its correlation with atmospheric circulation patterns and sea surface temperatures. The reconstructed hydroclimatic extremes back to 1768 CE are confirmed by documentary evidences, providing insights into regional hydroclimate variation and large-scale teleconnection patterns.

A ∼700 years perspective on the 21st century drying in the eastern part of Europe based on δ18O in tree ring cellulose

Viorica Nagavciuc et al.

Summary: Based on a 700-year tree-ring oxygen isotope chronology from Eastern Europe and paleo-reanalysis data, it is found that the summer drying observed in Eastern Europe over the past 150 years is unprecedented in the last 700 years. This drying is driven by a change in pressure patterns over Europe, leading to extreme summer droughts and aridification.

Hotspots for warm and dry summers in Romania

Viorica Nagavciuc et al.

Summary: This study assesses the spatiotemporal variability of hot and dry summers in Romania between 1950 and 2020, and analyzes the relationship with the prevailing large-scale atmospheric circulation. The length, spatial extent, and frequency of heat waves show decadal variations, with an accelerated increase after the 1990s. The prevailing large-scale circulation and enhanced atmospheric blocking activity are key drivers of hot summers in Romania.

An Evaluation of the Performance of the Twentieth Century Reanalysis Version 3

L. C. Slivinski et al.

Summary: The NOAA-CIRES-DOE Twentieth Century Reanalysis version 3 (20CRv3) provides reliable global atmospheric estimates from 1806 to 2015 by assimilating surface pressure observations and prescribing sea surface temperature, sea ice concentration, and radiative forcings. The dataset exhibits good skill in producing weather estimates and confidence through ensemble methods, performing well on various scales from weather events to long-term climate trends. Comparisons with independent observations and upper-air fields demonstrate the ability of 20CRv3 to capture trends in atmospheric variables and exhibit skill comparable to modern operational forecasts.

Effects of salt stress on the photosynthetic physiology and mineral ion absorption and distribution in white willow (Salix alba L.)

Xin Ran et al.

Summary: The study explored the adaptive mechanism of white willow in a salt stress environment. It was found that white willow can respond to salt stress by intercepting Na+ in the roots, improving the selective absorption of K+ and Ca2+, and increasing phi Do,showing self-regulation and adaptation abilities.

Groundwater extraction reduces tree vitality, growth and xylem hydraulic capacity in Quercus robur during and after drought events

Georgios Skiadaresis et al.

Summary: This study reveals that trees at sites with groundwater extraction show reduced growth and hydraulic conductivity during periods of moderate and extremely low soil water availability. Low-vigour trees, more common at extraction sites, struggle to recover growth and hydraulic capacity following drought, indicating prolonged drought effects. Long-term water deficit and reduced CO2 assimilation and hydraulic capacity post-drought likely contribute to the observed reductions in tree vitality at extraction sites.

Past megadroughts in central Europe were longer, more severe and less warm than modern droughts

M. Ionita et al.

Summary: By utilizing long-term observations and paleoclimate reconstructions, it is found that Central Europe experienced longer and more severe droughts in the past than in the 21st century. These historical megadroughts were associated with cold North Atlantic Ocean conditions, enhanced winter atmospheric blocking activity, reduced solar forcing, and explosive volcanism. Recent drought events are considered to be within the range of natural variability and not unprecedented over the last millennium.
