Incorporating temperature into seepage loss estimates for a large unlined irrigation canal

Ramon Naranjo et al.

Summary: This study used field observations and numerical models to simulate seepage losses in the Truckee Canal system during the 2018 and 2019 irrigation seasons. The results showed that seepage rates ranged from 0.16 to 4.6 m3/d m-1, and the total annual volumetric losses estimated for 2018 and 2019 were 1.6 x 10-2 to 1.2 x 10-2 km3. The estimated seepage losses accounted for 32% to 41% of the inflow volumes.

Reducing the conveyance losses in trapezoidal canals using compacted earth lining

Doaa A. El-Molla et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of compacted earth lining on seepage from trapezoidal earth canals using the SEEP/W model. The results demonstrate that compacted earth lining is an efficient method to reduce conveyance losses, saving a significant amount of water resources. Design charts and equations are suggested for implementing appropriate lining designs.
