Developing Flood Vulnerability Functions through Questionnaire Survey for Flood Risk Assessments in the Meghna Basin, Bangladesh

Islam M. Khairul et al.

Summary: This study developed synthetic Flood Damage Functions (FDFs) based on questionnaire survey data to assess flood vulnerability in agriculture and rural households in Bangladesh. The results revealed that there were minimal yield losses in rice crops at lower water levels, while mud houses and household property were found to be the most flood-vulnerable.

Flood damage functions based on a single physics- and data-based impact parameter that jointly accounts for water depth and velocity

Tommaso Lazzarin et al.

Summary: In this paper, a physics-based method for assessing flood damage is proposed. A non-dimensional impact parameter is introduced to combine water depth and flow velocity, which allows for evaluating relative damage functions for items of different nature. This method provides an understandable assessment of flood hazard even with limited data.

Developing a multivariable lookup table function for estimating flood damages of rice crop in Vietnam using a secondary research approach

Nhu Y. Nguyen et al.

Summary: It is increasingly important to evaluate the economic flood damage toward agricultural crops in developing countries. In this study, a multivariable lookup table function was derived for estimating flood damages to rice crops based on secondary research data from rural areas in Central Vietnam. It was found that rice crops are most vulnerable during the ripening and reproductive stages, with yield losses increasing significantly under prolonged inundation. The function outperformed univariable damage functions in estimating flood damages in the target area.

Flood depth-damage and fragility functions derived with structured expert judgment

Gonzalo L. Pita et al.

Summary: Depth-damage relationships are crucial for flood risk assessments, but often lacking in developing countries where floods cause severe losses. Modelers may use foreign functions or expert-elicitation surveys in the absence of site-specific data. These functions developed with expert knowledge in flood damage mechanisms can be useful for probabilistic flood risk assessments.

Component-based flood vulnerability modelling for cultural heritage buildings

Rui Figueiredo et al.

Summary: Flooding is a common and damaging natural hazard globally, leading to measures to reduce flood risk at governmental and international levels. This study proposes a component-based modelling framework for detailed vulnerability analyses of cultural heritage buildings, combining assessment of flood susceptibility of building components and evaluation of their relative value within the asset to define asset-specific flood vulnerability functions. It aims to support semi-quantitative probabilistic flood risk assessments for multiple exposed assets.
